I am going to be a senior in high school this year and am trying to get my senior schedual set up. I am currently trying to decide if I should take AP statistics or Pre-Calculus, or both. The reason this is a big deal is because I dream of going to U Of I, and with no honors/AP classes through out high school, I think it would be good if they saw I'm trying to challenge myself even more. Do you really need Calculus in college? I intend to study business in the years to come. WHat should i do?

Which U of I, that would be useful to know.

Precalc or Calc is more desired at competitive colleges. It is a core class, where Stat is more an elective stat. You will take stats in college if you study business so you don’t really need it in HS. But take as much of it as you can in college because it is a really good skill in a soft major.

Calculus will be part of any business major.

^what about political science or prelaw??? would stats or calc B be better? would it hurt to take stats over calc?

Calculus will NOT be part of ANY business major. Some may require it (for something like econometrics). Take stats if you intend to go into the social sciences or fields like history/lit. Calc is needed for all hard sciences and math.

You really have two different questions: 1) What class better fits into my major & future plans 2) which class gives me a better chance for admission. Defintely Calc. will be looked upon as adding to the “rigor” of your courses. Colleges want to see that you’ve taken the most challanging courses that your HS offers…I’d take both.
