I'm a bit confused on the need or importance of interviews for admission to Ithaca (Science and Humanities). Common Data Set lists it as "considered" but was wondering what current students, parents or IC admin might have to say. Did you interview? Etc. It's quite a distance, so want to make sure of the importance.
Thanks

Honestly, I haven’t heard of anybody doing an admission’s interview. I know some programs such as the honors program and other groups do interviews, but as far as plain admissions…I’m not sure. Honestly, I didn’t know they offered it, haha. So if you are far away, it’s not worth the travel

An interview isn’t important unless you are applying for PT/OT/TAM/Music. It might help for Park majors but in H&S there probably isn’t a point.

Kind of what I thought, but was just a bit confused by this on the website:

Ithaca College does not offer or require admission interviews, but we do encourage seniors who have applied or who have been accepted to IC to make a personal appointment with one of our admission counselors. It’s an excellent opportunity to tell our admission office more about who you are. At the same time, you’ll have the chance to learn more about the College and make an informed decision.

Thanks again to both of you.

Yeah…that’s just their way of saying “we don’t require interviews, but if you REALLLLLLY want to, come on in and we’ll chat.” haha

Regarding interviews for the BA theater program… Yes this is required and it needs to be scheduled during the same time and in the same location that auditions are held. We found this out the hard way. I had called Ithaca 3 times before we traveled out there from Colorado. Twice I talked to admissions and once I talked to someone who answered in the theater department. Each time I asked about interviews and made it clear that my son was interested in theater.

We spent $1200 to travel to visit Ithaca only to be finally told once we were there how the interview process worked. Needless to say, I was fuming. To add insult to injury, the admissions staff person we spoke to basically told me that the web site was very clear on the point and that if I had read it correctly, I would have known.

Now, if my son wants to pursue a BA in Drama at Ithaca, we would have to either travel back during the audition times early in 2011 or we would have to travel to one of the remote audition sites in LA, NYC etc. You can imagine that this does not sit well with me. Based on our experience, I’m encouraging him to look at other colleges and universities.

Yes, for entrance into the music and theater programs, auditions are required. That shouldn’t come as a surprise because, like most schools that have adequate performing art programs, you must prove your worth in the field. However, for entrance to H&S, it’s solely academic.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience, I’m actually really surprised. IC tends to do all that they can to reach out to prospectives.
