<p>Hey guys, I'm just trying to add to the list of schools I'll be applying to this fall. I am subpar when comparing to Ivy League hopefuls, but hopefully some of you could help me. </p>
<p>These are my stats:
Male Filipino New Jersey Resident
Intended Major: Computer Science
SAT: 2010 (580 CR, 760 M, 670 W)
SATII: Taking Math II, Chemistry, and Physics in OCT
ACT: 32 (35 English, 30 Math, 30 Reading, 31 Science, 30 Combined)
GPA: 95.04/100 (magnet school, school uses the QPA system)
I got 1 B, so I'm probably somewhere between a 3.8 and 3.9
Course Rigor: All classes are honors level, school offers limited amount of AP's until Senior Year - I still feel it's limited due to requirements made by the school. I'd say I'm taking somewhat close to as challenging as you can make your schedule at my school while playing a varsity sport with multiple AP's, computer classes (java, oracle, web design with html5, data security), and spanish 4 yrs
Rank: Class Not Ranked, only 70 in my grade due to selectivity for school, one of the top schools in NJ)
E.C.: This is my glaring weak point.. not as involved as many people, been volunteering at my church for 4 years and have been on the golf team for a few years (honorable mention in county tournament), got an award for doing an anti-bullying seminar in another country (Philippines), ran a book drive to donate books to a children's center in the Philippines, National Spanish Exam award, that's about it</p>
<p>These are the schools:
Rutgers NB
Stevens Institute of Technology
Univ. of Maryland CP
Lehigh
RPI (reach)
Carnegie Mellon (reach, borderline no chance)</p>
<p>I'm really just looking for schools that would be a match for me and help further increase my interest in computer science. Thanks!</p>
<p>What’s your money situation?
A) Parents will pay full cost
B) Will likely qualify for financial aid, Parents will pay rest - focus on privates
C) Parents can pay but won’t pay.
D) other</p>
<p>How far from NJ are you willing to go?</p>
<p>I don’t think Stevens is that great for CS. You can do better. </p>
<p>RPI is not a reach, it’s a match. </p>
<p>I agree with your assessment of CMU but outstanding SAT II’s can potentially help</p>
<p>Some good choices
University of Rochester - great CS.
University of Pittsburgh - you can take some classes at CMU next door.
Stony Brook
UMASS
UConn
University of Wisconsin-Madison
University of Waterloo (Canada) - great CS school
Purdue
Georgia Tech
University of Washington-Seattle
NYU
Northeastern</p>
<p>Thank you so much for the reply - a very informative one at that. </p>
<p>My financial situation would be B) Will likely qualify for financial aid, Parents will pay rest</p>
<p>From NJ, I wanna stay East - so anything near the East coast. I originally had GT on my list, don’t know how it slipped my mind. </p>
<p>Tough to hear about Stevens - main reason I’m considering it is due to how close it is to my home. I’d be able to commute, and therefore save some money. However, if the computer science program is not as great as you say, then I’d definitely go to other schools over it. </p>
<p>What are your opinions of RPI’s CS program?</p>
<p>Thanks for the list!</p>
<p>I really don’t want to go to a school that would be too expensive for my family - my brother will apply to college a couple years after me.</p>
<p>Someone asked me to look at Stevens a while back and it seemed like they required certain courses because that’s what the faculty knew how to teach rather than because that’s what you needed to be a computer scientist. It’s still the case, in my opinion. </p>
<p>
</p>
<p>Seems ok. </p>
<p>Look through what’s required for the major, what elective options you have, and what research areas people work on at the different schools and see if you can see a difference in opportunities. </p>
<p>Take a serious look at University of Rochester. Also, though it’s a reach, Johns Hopkins isn’t out of the question. </p>
<p>If you can ace the SAT IIs, I think Cornell, CMU are back in play. </p>
<p>How much can your parents pay if you had to pay list price? That determines which publics are worth considering.</p>
