Hi
Here are my stats:
GPA: 3.25 UW (around 3.6 W)
SAT: M-680 V-690 W-690
ECs:
-1000 hours of community service at a local summer camp
-3 years of student government
-Model United Nations Communications Director + won MUN awards
-Founder of school ultimate frisbee team

I know most of these are reaches, but here are the schools I am looking at:
-USC
-Wesleyan (definite reach, but uncle is alum and wanted me to apply)
-Middlebury
-NYU
-Boston U
-Whitman
-Lewis and Clark
-Sarah Lawrence
-Occidental

It seems that my low GPA will keep me from most of these schools. Any thoughts/help much appreciated.

Wesleyan is like the hardest lac to get into in the north east!! I don't think you should definately count on getting in there, not that you can't (you have a shot) but I would think Middlebury and especially NYU would be easier to get into than Wesleyan

Thanks for the input. It seems that the general consensus is that I would be accepted to Whitman and Occidental, but the problem is I know people with very good stats who have been rejected from those schools. I can't help but be a little skeptical.

No, wouldn't say Occidental is a definiite accept. They are looking for more than just test scores, they look for passion and grades. You still have a chance there.

USC - reach
Wesleyan - reach
Middlebury - reach
NYU - reach
BU - match
Whitman - Match
Lewis and Clark - Match
Sarah Lawrence - match
Oxy - Match

I would put Lewis & Clark and Whitman into the reach category. I know many students with superior stats either rejected or wait-listed at those schools.

If you had to choose right now from your list, do you have one that you really love? Why, what do you love to do? What do you want to do? Do you have a preference for location? Are finances important to you and your family? On top of answering those questions for yourself, you need find a good, solid safety.

overseas- I live in Seattle, and I would like to stay fairly close to home. Whitman and Lewis and Clark are probably my most realistic choices because they are close. Occidental is sort of a west coast dream school, while Wesleyan and Middlebury are east coast dream schools. I don't want to get my heart set on any because I would enjoy all of them and the admissions decisions could go either way. At this point I would like to end up in New York or Los Angeles and be a journalist, but I would really like a solid liberal arts education because that may change. My grandparents are helping with finances, so they are not a major issue. At this point my safety is Western Washington University, which is a good school. Any suggestions for other safeties?

Wesleyan is an excellent school, but I wouldn;t go so far as to say it's the hardest-to-get-into LAC on the east coast. It has a 28% acceptance rate. Amherst, Williams, SWarthmore, Bowdoin all are harder to get into slightly. However, I WOULD say that it is the best LAC ever lol.

Perhaps what they meant to say, was that Wesleyan is the hardest LAC to get into FROM the East Coast. It is extremely popular among blue state liberals and I've heard that at least one prep school dean believes it is as hard to get into as Yale if you're from New York City. One possible barometer for this is the fact that Wesleyan has by far the lowest acceptance rate for blacks among the small New England LACs:

Pitzer has had a surge in applicants in the past couple of years and is trying very hard to increase its USNWR rankings, so it is becoming much more selective. They are especially concerned with increasing their GPA average. Last year, for students with GPA's over 3.5, SAT's were not required. You may want to visit the campus as well, some are not enthused with its buildings, others don't care because the outside weather is usually quite nice.
