Need help -apply now or wait a little longer?

Hello there,
I made a tread a few weeks ago about my chances at certain schools (USC, UChicago, and Cornell) which many of you replied to. Before I continue further I like to thank all of you who replied for the feedback.

Well I have been debating for sometime now on whether I should apply for Fall '07 or Spring '08. My current stats are: 4.0 GPA for UC Davis for one quarter only and an average 3.5 Weighted GPA in HS. SAT scores were 2070SAT1 and so on.
Assuming I wait until Spring '08 and that I maintain a high GPA, will my chances be better? I heard that colleges do not look at your H.S records after a year in college, but I am not too sure. What do you guys think?

Thanks again

Actually, colleges will still heavily weigh your high school grades until you have about 2 years of college, so while it will make a slight difference if you wait until the Spring 08 applying term, it won't matter that much. Either way, your high school grades will be a big part of your academic side.

Some schools don't accept spring transfers - Chicago being one of those. I don't know about USC, but Chicago and Cornell both still want your hs record. They probably consider it less and less as you accumulate more of a college record, but they do look at it.

I don't think anyone can give you a real assessment of whether your chances increase, but I think you may find yourself choosing between Fall 07 and Fall 08 in one or two cases.

Do you think you can get a strong prof rec at this time? That might be a factor. If you don't have the relationship(s) yet with profs, that could be an argument for waiting and working to build one or two.

Thanks for the replies - seems like my H.S record will follow me to my grave :p.
As for getting recs - it's quite difficult on a quarter system since we switch courses every 2 months or so and a great majority of teachers are only lecturers, some who are actually graduate students themselves. Other than recs, I've garnered some excellent ECs at my school already pertaining to my major (Research Assistant, Dean's Honor List, Tutor, Business Clubs, everything except working at a firm).

But my real question is, how badly is that 3.5gpa from H.S going to impact my chances?

I don't know about the others, but I'd say you have a good shot at USC, provided that 4.0 came from demanding courses. If you can keep up your grades, I don't suppose it could hurt to wait if you're serious about the others.

If you really want to go into those type of colleges...I suggest that you maintain a high GPA and add onto your list of ECs and apply for transferring after two years.....that's unless you are DESPERATE to transfer.

However, you might have a chance at USC.

Good luck!
