Need Help, B.C. or B.U

My daughter was accepted Early Action at Boston College and applied to Boston University with her major being Business. My question is this, with all things being equal (costs, fin-aid), which of the two are better and why? Please include academics, attitude, dorms, college life, social, location in Boston, sports and other reasons. I will also post this thread on the B.U. site. Thanks

Your daughter is obviously really smart if she got in early, so congratulations. I hate the question of "which is better?" The two schools are like apples and oranges. Its all a matter of preference and how much money you get form each of them (if that's a factor). If these are your daughters first 2 choices, she is obviously VERY confused. The two are like polar opposites. If you can't visit them, at least take the 5 minutes to look up info about it online, seeing as you have enough time to post in this teenage website in the middle of the day.

I visited both a couple of years ago. Both are great schools.

I didn't like the fact that, in BU's case, the campus and the city were one. I really liked the "traditional" campus of BC (but still just a couple of minutes from the city).

Another factor was size. BC has 8,900 undergrads, compared to BU's 17,860. BC isn't a "small" school, but it still had a sense of community that couldn't be found at BU.

I applied to BC (EA) and got in, but I did not apply to BU. The reasons I didn't like BU could be the reasons why your daughter likes it, it’s pretty much personal preference. Just what I thought of the two schools.

Good luck!

Congrats to your daughter ... she has (at least) 2 great choices ... and living in the Boston area I believe she will love living here.

BU and BC are very different. BU is much bigger and feels much bigger. BU is in an urban environment without much of a campus (and in a great section of Boston) while BC is in a suburb and has a terrific campus (this is interesting dichotamy since they are 2-3 miles apart on the same trolly line). BC plays big time DI sports while BU plays mid-level DI sports. BC is a catholic school and is a somewhat more conservative and homogenous place than BU.

Very different places ... I assume an overnight stay will help your daughter easily pick between them.

www.studentsreview.com has honest reviews of both bc and bu... you should check it out

I agree Chrisso620 that the word "better" was a miscommunication of my thoughts. I was just looking for views of the differences between the two schools. A visit to Boston from our southwestern city really peaked her curiosity. She chose to apply at BU & BC in addition to NYU and a couple of midwestern State schools. The pamplets and websites the schools put out, although helpful, don't really compare the two or give a view that isn't from the recruiters. Having read another thread, a poster relayed the feeling that some of the B.C. prospective girls at the info meetings seemed like somewhat snobby, private school girls from exclusive parts. This is the kind of image that kept her from applying at some schools like the Ivy's, (not that she'd get in), but that she would have to deal with being common folk from the southwest trying to fit in with pre-made clicks. She did fall in love with Boston ( I am a life long Red Sox Fan), and both schools are great. I did not realize that there was such a difference in campus styles. Thanks

hey Jazzy1, i have the feeling that you were referring to my post about the "snobby prospective girls" who got into BC. I just want to clarify that the girls i was talking about are high school girls, who honestly like most of us on this forum, have no idea what it's really like to be in college and hopefully, will grow to be better more mature people. The students who I talked to that currently attend BC seemed liked intelligent, down to earth, generally cool people. One of the guys said that about half of the kids at BC come from public schools if that means anything. I don't know a lot about BU other than what people have already mentioned, but I do know that Boston College has a higher ranking than Boston University (i think 37 to like high 50's). Remember that these are just statistics from u.s. news so take them for what they're worth, but I thought it was pretty awesome that the University of Washington ranked higher than BU. (I'm thinkin' of attending UW.) Anyways, I just wanted to clarify that my experience w/ BC admits were w/ high school girls so please don't rely too heavily on this opinion when considering Boston College.

P.S. Plus, Boston College is a Jesuit school and Jesuits are a group known for being "the educators" of the Catholic community. (I don't mean only teaching about Catholocism. I mean being just "the teachers" in general.)
