I got accepted to UC Irvine for Economics (my second choice), but I want to pursue Computer Science (my first choice). I believe I can’t switch majors at the moment, so I’m required to attend UCI as an econ major and take specific courses and achieve a certain GPA. If I do so, is switching my major from Econ to CS guaranteed? Or is there an off chance that they won’t allow me to switch, assuming I fulfill the course/GPA requirements.
Thanks!
I would recommend asking an admissions counselor regarding the technicalities- if you take X classes if you are guaranteed and what his or her personal advice is. Best of luck
What you need to do to change to CS:
Cumulative UC GPA: 2.0
Course grades
2.0 average GPA or above in ICS/CSE 21 and 22 or Informatics 41 and 42, or ICS 31 and 32; and one of the following: Math 2A, Math 2B, ICS 6B/Math 6B or ICS 6D/Math 6D.
Yeah I understand that much, I’m just curious that if I fulfill all those requirements, am I guaranteed a change of major? Or is there a chance that they won’t let me switch.
I would check with an advisor at Freshman orientation and ask them the same question. Are you guaranteed a major change if you meet the requirements? Always best to get it directly from the source.
You can go on your myadmissions page to submit a change of major request, but I think you have to submit your SIR first. The only majors that you wouldn’t be able to switch into are nursing, business, engineering, dance and music. All other majors are fairly simple to switch into.
