I will be a Senior next year and I am trying to get a list of prospective colleges. I got a list, now I just need to choose between two colleges as my last selection. My dad will only pay for a selected number of college applications. The two colleges I am trying to choose between as my last college is Wisconsin- Madison or Michigan- AA. I liked Wisconsin's campus better and AA wasn't as nice. Michigan has the better ranking. Money shouldn't be much of an issue, as my dad has assured me. I am planning to study Biology. Someone please help! lol

BUMP!!! please

You seem to like Wisconsin more so I would say there. Dont apply to a school just based off the ranking

Well when it comes down to choosing a school rankings are huge. Which is the better school when it comes to the life sciences, especially Bio. BTW I plan on going to medical school.

Those are comparable schools and college towns, if going to a big research U is what you want. Do you live in WI or MI? Even if $$ is not a big object, avoiding a big OOS price tag could be the deciding factor.

nope not in state for any of those two. I am from Nebraska and definitely don’t want to attend the University of Nebraska.

please bump

Michigan is definitely a higher ranked school, but where you go depends on how you see yourself at both campuses. If you feel you fit in better in Madison then there’s your answer. The campus life is probably similar. You may want to ask yourself some even more important questions- what do you want to do with your degree, and which school has a better track record getting you there?

well I did some research and it seems as if Madison is ranked a bit better in both Biology and Chemistry. I want to attend medical school and go onto becoming a doctor. Also, i did some research on both campuses and referred to Fiskes College Guide and Madison gets 4 stars on quality of life and social life whereas Michigan gets 3 stars on both. Moreover, during the visits I did favor Madison’s campus and really loved the lake scene whereas i found Michigan’s to be somewhat dull. Both campuses were visited during the students finals week.

you seem pretty sold on madison. michigan is harder to get into and it sounds like to me if you were rejected from michigan, you would feel pretty regretful about not applying to madison, where you have greater chances statistically. madison is known for better science programs, but michigan is better for engineering. if u r considering engineering at all then I would recommend michigan’s college of engineering, otherwise go madison (because that’s what it really seems like you want). good luck!

I’d like to thank everyone for the help so far! Well I mean I’m trying to decide assuming I get into both schools. I have very solid SAT’s and GPA so far. As of now I am just interested in the life sciences and have no plans of getting into Engineering. What are your opinions towards the campuses?

Please bump!

BUMP!! lol

What’s wrong with Nebraska? Don’t forget that medical school is expensive, so you may want to save money to apply to medical school costs.

Honestly medical schools don’t really care about how hard your degree was; they only care about your GPA. If that "happiness"and “best fit” stuff doesn’t matter as much as getting to medical school than you might want to go to a place where you’ll get a higher GPA. I say might because you still should consider how much the difficulty of your classes will affect your MCAT score. You could major in forestry and get into medical school as long as you take the required courses and get a high GPA/MCAT.

This is really not true - esp when you are talking med school for your future. Students from the school where I work regularly attend colleges that don’t even make Forbes top 650 colleges and yet some students from those colleges get accepted into med schools every single year…

What counts for med school is being at or near the top where you go to school. That could be the small school next door (or across the country). It could be large state U. It could be a Top 20 school. It could be anything in between. Where are YOU likely to do the best?

This thread would be a good one to read:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pre-med-topics/1122176-bluedevilmikes-ten-step-guide-picking-premed-school.html

If you pick a school you barely get in you are LEAST likely to do well as your competition will have a bit of an edge foundationally over you.

I never really thought of it that way. Yet, I still have an urgency to attend a top tier public university with a nice social life, great sports, and really good academics. I mean if you apply to top medical schools such as JHU medical school or Harvard Med school; wouldn’t they prefer students from the USNWR’s Top 50 universities?

Well when it comes down to choosing a school rankings are huge. Which is the better school when it comes to the life sciences, especially Bio. BTW I plan on going to medical school.

???

Says who? Certainly NOT medical schools. They don’t give a rat’s patootie about rankings.

And, virtually ANY decent school can have a good bio program…that’s like having a decent rice recipe…not hard to do.

You’ll want a school where YOUR STATS are well within the top 25% of the school to better your chances in your premed prereq classes.

nope not in state for any of those two. I am from Nebraska and definitely don’t want to attend the University of Nebraska.

What are your stats?

how much will your parents pay? If they won’t pay the high OOS costs for UWisc or another OOS public, then the question may be moot unless you go to one that will give you large merit for your stats.

Also…ALL US MD schools are EXCELLENT. You’d count your lucky stars to get accepted to any ONE of them.

Honestly medical schools don’t really care about how hard your degree was

True, and the “ranking” of an undergrad bio or chem program is completely irrelevant for med school. Won’t matter a bit. Won’t make a difference on your MCAT score.

Lol I’m deciding between those two schools as well. I am in state for AA but am really looking at Madison as my choice of school. They are ranked higher in bio, my intended major, and I also am trying to be a doctor. AA is a lot more competitive and I am pretty sure if I don’t get into AA, ill get in UW. Your comments about UW made me more secure about UW as I would have never tthought it would be a nicer school than AA. When it comes done it, and if I get accepted into both school, ill have to visit and see which one I like more.
