???

You’re instate for UMich but you’re considering the high OOS rate for UWisc because of a bio ranking??? What the heck? For med school??? Why?

Will your parents pay OOS for UWisc over instate at UMich? If not, then the question will be moot. (not worth it to pay OOS for UW over instate UMich…not at all)

Yea I didn’t hear much about UW till my junior year. But if you look at the two schools, even on Google, you will definitely be more attracted towards UW- Madison. Also, State Street and the way the campus is built adds into the social life and the fun. For example, when it snows in Madison I heard they get together and get into a huge snowball fight. But, the school really did look better. As for the question about OOS tuition, I did talk to me father and he said he will have no problem paying for it. Really blessed with the way he was able to save up money for us Also, will being admitted to the schools Honors program help with med school admissions?

Med schools are less likely to take you as a Bio major than say any other major. As previous posters have stated, They don’t care about your major. As long as you have the prereqs and GPA, they will accept you.

@mom2collegekids, hi

Let me clear it up. I would pick AA over UW when it comes down to money. I have no idea how my financial situation will be in a year.

Also if I don’t get into AA and money isn’t a problem, ill go to UW. If I get into both schools and money isn’t a problem, ill have to decide.

I’d like to note that coming from Nebraska, Wisconsin would be a bit cheaper as well since the OOS price tag is cheaper for Wisconsin, 10 k cheaper.

Tiger - if your folks can pay for it and you like UW, then go there and do the work to get top grades. UW will provide you with as good of a chance of getting into med school as pretty much any other school (including Nebraska or U Mich). The key is being at or near the top GPA-wise, a good MCAT score, and good ECs + LORs - not ranking. ;)

anonemuss - it’s not really statistically true about Bio majors being at a disadvantage. The stats are relatively similar for any major with similar GPAs and MCATs. A potential Pre-med should choose a major they like and are likely to do well in.

I’m not only looking at UW because of the ranking but the fact that I loved the campus and I’ve heard great things about the social life.

^^^
Something seems odd to me. Your dad says that he’ll pay the OOS costs at the schools you’re applying to, but he’s tightly limiting how many apps he’ll pay for? that seems odd. I can understand a parent not wanting to pay for 20+ applications…how many apps will he pay for?

All flagships have active (and very similar) social atmospheres, so that shouldn’t be a factor.

As for the question about OOS tuition, I did talk to me father and he said he will have no problem paying for it

Did you tell him the full COA or just the tuition cost? How much is UWisconsin OOS COA…$40k? more? (just checked…it’s about $40k per year).

It just seems odd that someone who’ll pay $160k for an OOS public would balk at a few extra college apps.

Wisconsin is a great school, and is very well regarded nationally and internationally. Honestly you can’t go wrong at just about any Big 10 school. While public opinion says UMich is the ‘better’ school, the amount it’s ‘better’ by doesn’t really justify it, IMO, in you spending 4 years somewhere you don’t like as much.

Also, don’t put much, if any stock in academic rankings. There isn’t, and won’t ever be, a fair way to rank schools.

Yea he’s allowing me to apply to ten schools. I have nine schools down and currently am trying to figure out which should be the tenth school (UW or UofM). The reason he is limiting is because he knows if I could, I would apply to about 30 + schools LOL. Yea he is aware of the COA and said he will have no problem paying for it, he was very optimistic so I should be good in that department. However, he is fixed on me only being able to apply to ten schools.

Would it be correct to assume that your nine other schools are schools you prefer to Wisconsin and Michigan? Including your safeties?

Well my safeties is University of Nebraska, University of Alabama (football fan and really liked the school), and LSU (loved my visit there and sister attended the university). I prefer Wisco and UofM to those. Besides that are a few ivies and other top tier private universities such as Duke and USC.

Are Wisconsin and Michigan less preferable than all of your non-safeties? If not, then you can put them both on your list and drop a non-safety that is less preferable.

tigers…what are your stats? Are they well within the top quartile for ivies? If not, and you want to go to med school, then going to an ivy isn’t a great idea.

You don’t want to be one of those ivy premeds who ends up with a non-med-school worthy GPA because the stronger students grabbed the A’s in the BCMP classes.

Yes they are less preferable. However, my parents really want me to apply to University of Nebraska and LSU because of the family ties with the university. As for U of A, I really like and respect the school and most likely will apply.

I am currently ranked number one in my class of 373. I scored a 2270 on my SAT’s from junior year. However, I expect my score to increase because I am currently taking a SAT class. My GPA is a 4.0 UW. Got A’s in all my Honors and AP Classes. Completed two internships out of country. I am a three sport athlete and am captain for the Soccer and Wrestling team. Also, I hold leadership positions in three of the five clubs I’m in. Next year, I plan on being voted class president. My junior year I modeled for A&F… idk if that helps at all. LOL

Both of my kids applied to Madison-Wisconsin OOS over Michigan. Neither of them saw any difference in the academics, and I couldn’t see it either. They liked Madison better than AA too. The extra $10K discount was also nice.

Though both were accepted, they both chose to attend private schools.

What school did they go onto attend? And yea I preferred AA before stepping into Wisconsin’s campus. As crazy as it may sound, I liked it a lot better than Stanford’s campus as well.
