You need to know that engineering will be hard, no matter where you go. The math gets very complex. Most who wash out either have weak foundations in math or were unaware of how mathy it really is. As long as you like math, have a solid foundation, and good work ethic, you’ll be fine AND it’ll be hard everywhere.
MonsterCrwu,
Would you mind sharing your academic stats? I am an Illinois resident, looking at schools with my son and l he liked Iowa State. The $17k cost for Iowa state you got is great, and was just curious what it takes to get the cost down to that range. thanks!

@howdo5 so my act is 34 and my gpa is 3.75, i have some good EC’s and a good essay and two references. ( the latter two is required for Scholarship). If you have 33 to 36 ACT or 1500 SAT you get nominated for Scholarship, starting Fall 2018
Here are the college engineering stats for 2017.
Enjoy.
Engineering curriculum/culture reform (with an eye toward improving retention and diversity) started in the 1980’s
Here is an article in the Iowa State newspaper (circa 1999) indicating that they had not implemented any of the changes

By 2012, the changes had become more mainstream. Here is an ASEE report with some schools that had recently made some of the changes and had seen a measurable improvement in retention

Here is an ASEE Video produced as a part of the project and a link to the report

The question in my mind is how can a Dean of Engineering who was a past president of the ASEE blame her retention problem on selectivity issues?
The Dean is a woman and you have used the male pronoun when referring to the person you spoke with. Are you sure it was the Dean that made the comment about retention rate?
yes, @Mastadon, they were deans of college who is a female and dean of specific engineering departments ( EE) who was a male. so i was talking about them ( sometimes the female and sometimes the male) Anyways I chose Iowa State at the end of the day. it stood out to me as a whole after i visited all the schools on my List. UIUC was the first choice and then Iowa State. but i chose Iowa State at the end so i hope i enjoy my next four years being a Cyclone !! Thanks to all who helped !
@MonsterCrwu, how do you like ISU?? My son (current HS senior) has narrowed his options down to 3 (Texas A&M, ISU and Auburn. We visited ISU in November and he loved it! We are from AL so Auburn is our state school option. He is in a similar predicament in that he is weighing the costs of his 3 options. He currently has full tuition at Auburn (would just like to go OOS) $13,000 a year at ISU (still waiting to see if there will be more) and waiting to hear from A&M which we hear can take forever. If he can’t get the OOS waiver there it will not be an option. Crazy expensive.
Anyway, would love to hear your experience now that you are there! Hopefully you will see this and have time to respond.
