#Need help, choosing university

Hi guys I am Henry from Indonesia
I am considering to continue my master degree on chemical engineering in US, focus on energy storage( especially on graphene)
I get scholarship and they gave me preference as this list:

  1. Michigan State University
  2. North Carolina State University
  3. University of Houston
  4. University of South Carolina

Do you have any idea for me, maybe to change the preference ?
University of Pittsburgh vs University of Houston, which one is better?
Thank You

Michigan State graduate school of engineering is known to be good, but their undergraduate program less so – their average scores for accepted students are lower than NC State with a much higher acceptance rate. I’d recommend NC State over Mich State. (You also might like the weather in NC more than Michigan esp coming from Indonesia).

Can’t say much about the U of Houston, but if you want to get a job in the oil & gas industry, then that’s probably the place to be as they’re likely to have connections due to the location.

U. Pittsburgh is a solid university. Overall it’s more highly ranked than U Houston.

so Pittsburg is the best of all 5 and most difficult to enter?

I would say NCSU for engineering is tops.Better weather, too.
UHOuston for Petroleum Engineering only.
Between Pitt and USouth Carolina, I’d pick based on environment since both are similarly good academically.
Michigan State is at the same level but suffer from UMich competition.

What are your net costs at each? Would you stay for a year only or for the duration of a degree?

I get full scholarship for tution & living cost and i will stay for a full master degree, maybe about 2 years

What specialty would you be working on?

Oh, sorry, I mistakenly thought you had been asking about undergraduate. Both MSU or NCSU are good, but NCSU has the edge. NCSU is also ranked higher than Pittsburgh for graduate engineering. And arguably a nicer place to live.

I will focus on energy storage , especially with graphene

@ insanedreamer arguably or not arguably? but how about public transportation on those campus area?

For public transportation, I’d go with NCSU or Pitt, absolutely not Houston which is car-kingdom.

" arguably or not arguably? "

Obviously comparing cities is subjective, so read up on Raleigh and Pittsburgh online. But unless you prefer to go to Pitt I don’t see any reason to choose it over NCSU.
