It depends on what you are looking for in a school (i.e., academics, location, sports).
I don't know too much about either school, but from what I've heard about MP, it sounds really awesome.

Do you like the all girls environment? I'd pay the deposit at Blair and remain at the wait list at SG if that's allowed, but Blair and SG are really close academically, and both have amazing campuses.

Congratulations on having 2 great choices! Have you been to both revisits? Sometimes the answer is obvious after spending a day at each school. You are also deciding between co-ed and all girls, so in a way, these will probably weigh heavily in your final decision. If you enjoy being around boys, Blair is the way to go! There are more boys than girls now (I think it's 1.4:1), so I suspect the girls get plenty of attention.

I don't know anything about Miss Porters School, but I do know about Blair because I have a child there. It is a great school that just keeps getting better. With the addition of the new athletic & student center, I think next year will be an exciting year to attend. Please feel free to ask me questions here or pm them to me.

If you are still at a loss after revisits, take a look at academic offerings, clubs, ec's, sports, etc. and evaluate which school offers you more of what you think you might be interested in trying or continuing.

hey! i would focus mostly on whether or not you want the all girls experience. if you do or don't and you make the wrong choice, you may regret it. so think long and hard :)

blair equals better name. (:

ahaha!! ! prepp- Thats what my friends keep telling me! They're all like "ZOMG! GOSSIP GIRL".

hehe

THAT WAS MY EXACT THOUGHT.
hahahhah.

BLAIR, I'd go with them.

go with your gut. attend the revisits and see which one seems to feel like home!

what they said ^

Are you going to the re-visit day tomorrow at Porter's? My daughter is a junior and loves it. Academics are top notch, dorms are great, the community is special, and the traditions are ageless and nice to be a part of.
Good luck with your decision.

Isn't MPS Jackie-o's school?

She attended there, yes.

At first I was creeped out because I thought gossip girl blair. LIKE ZOMG WHAT COINCEDENCE SEEING BOTH THEIR NAMES AT THE SAME TIME ON TV AND INTERNET XD

but I think Blair is more recognized in name, because a couple people applied here for Blair, but nobody for Miss Porter's (it's an all-girls school right? if it is, unless I'm mistaking it for another school, that might be why; we're not too thrilled if it's not coed here)
but of course miss porter's a highly recognized school, I've heard it tons of times here ;) and no doubt it has good academics and extracurricular options.

Blair...Blair...Blair...it is fantastic all around...academically, athletically, asthetically...but unique in its' committment to creating and maintaining a nurturing, family style, close knit COMMUNITY...with teachers and mentors sincerely interested and dedicated to all students and their well being, academically and personally.

As you will hear / read a LOT, it's all about FIT.
Don't let anyone tell you that "Blair is BETTER" or the Better "name" because that's simply not true and should not be a reason for selecting a school.
There are many great benefits to single gender education, but it is not always for everyone. That, as others have said, is probably your first consideration. However, to note, at MPS you will see boys A LOT. If you swim, you will swim with the boys swim team from Avon Old Farms (they use the MPS pool) and they do combined activities (both formal and informal) with AOF quite a bit.
Location is another, if that matters. Think about which is closer to home, where your family could see games, things like that.

There are lots of threads about selecting a school - check them out. PM Burb and Shelley to ask specific questions since they have children at the schools. As they said, you have 2 great choices.

Good luck.

Nice post, Linda!

linda, linda, linda.
i wasn't saying that
she should pick blair
just because of the name.
goodness. what i was trying
to say, what that i personally
prefer the name blair to
miss porter's. this is all about
opinions. i wasnt' telling her
where to go, and
i think names do matter
in choosing a school,
but not a lot.

I wasn't replying just to you ! preppp, but to the topic in general of which is a better "name." It is opinion. And, many have stated opinions as fact - looking back your post sounded a little that way. Ask 10 people and you'll get different answers on which is the "best" name. I personally feel that the name of the school does not matter in making a decision.

In many topics over the last few weeks some have posted this school or that school is "way better" or better "academically" or this school has a better "name" or "reputation" than the other. It's really a matter of looking at what the individual student wants. So what if the school offers an AP class in underwater tuba playing...if you don't plan on studying underwater tuba playing it really doesn't matter. Every school that is mentioned here will challenge every student that posts here. Will they ALL offer everything every student is interested in? Well, no, of course not - that's where the choices of schools comes in. But for people to keep posting (again, this is not addressed to you ! preppp) that one school is WAYYYY better academically than another is really just not true.

As I said, it's about fit and where the op feels most comfortable. What feels like home, what has the sports she wants, the EC's, the structure, things like that.
