I'm going to be a senior next fall and I've been trying to research what colleges to look at and visit over the summer but I've had a tough time coming up with any schools. I'm not sure if I want to atttend a big school or a small school or a public school or private school so I guess just general schools that you might think would be safeties matches or reaches for someone with a 5.23/5.00 gpa (mostly honor classes) and a 33 on the act also I think I might be interested in being a history or business major.

5.23? I thought 5.0 Weighted was the highest, 4.0 UW.
Anyways, apply to all the Ivies. You're a regular contender, and a little farther ahead than quite a few. Great ACT score btw. I couldn't exactly tell you what colleges you could get into just from your academic scores though. We need to see your EC's as well.

Umm..as far as business goes, check out UofChicago, uVA, Stanford, and pretty much the top business schools. You shouldn't settle for less. Good luck.

My school has a weird grading system so that might have given you the wrong idea about what schools I should be looking at because a 5.23 at my school puts me just within the top 10%. Also extracurricular wise I've done a decent amount but nothing near what some people have done. I've done DECA for three years, Investment Club for three years, and played baseball and lacrosse also I have done summer programs in England and China

Start visiting colleges near you - large, small, public, private, university, LAC - and figure out what you want in a college. Then you'll have better information to make a list, and hopefully have time to visit some of those. You also need to talk to your parents and find out just how much they can afford, to determine if that will need to be a factor in your list.

I think the summer programs in England and China should help you out..depending on what they are. If they are business related like an intership, then nice =]
Just post all your grades (A,B,C,etc) from freshman year so we know exactly what your GPA is.
Top 10% is good though, so good job on that.

As far as for how much we can take on expense wise I've talked to my parents about it, and they said that it won't be a major factor.

As far as grades go I'll post my grades fresh-junior year

If you're not sure yet what kind of school you want, how about what environment? Vibrant big city or laid-back smaller town? Do you have hobbies/interests that are easier to pursue in a particular climate or part of the country? Would you like to be close to home or try a different part of the world entirely?

Academically you'd be a strong candidate anywhere.

Emory in Atlanta

Don't just automatically apply to all the Ivies and expect to get in - your grades are good, but your ACT is nothing stellar (don't get me wrong - great grade - but it's not gonna get you in on its own), and a lot of acceptance depends on EC's. Also, you haven't been taking many AP classes - your GPA looks nice but the classes don't seem to be that rigorous. Does your school offer AP's?

First of all, what kind of extracurriculars do you do? Good grades will only get your foot in the door. Most of your acceptance at top-tier schools will depend on your activities, and it'll also help us gauge what schools you could get into/what schools you'd like with a bit more knowledge about you.

Second of all, what do you want out of a college? Where do you want it to be? What activities do you want to do? Is there a "must-have" major, minor, or study abroad option? Are you interested in big-name schools or a cheap quality education?

Simply put, just a GPA isn't enough information. But as someone who's been trying to make the same decision, I'd love to help you if I knew more about you :)

Thanks for the thoughtful response, I know my schedule might not seem that rigourous but my freshmen year the only honors class I didn't take was Spanish and my sophmore year I took the only ap offered as well as all honors classes except for chinese(which wasnt offered as an honors class) and english. Junior Year I was in all honors classes except for english which was the only other AP I could take junior year. Next Year though when more AP's are being offered I'm taking AP Art History, Euro, Calc, and Econ.

Costwise I'm ok, so its more about finding a good fit, and for programs I'm interested in history and business so those are gonna be the two potential majors I'm thinking about.

Truthfully I really dont think Im at an ivy league level as far as for admissions, my extra curriculars are pretty weak with just DECA investment club, baseball, and lacrosse. The only Ivy I was thinking of was liberal arts at Penn so I guess I'd be interested on ur thoughts about that

A lot of the schools being mentioned don't have undergrad business programs, even if they have famous graduate business programs (Stanford and Chicago, for example). These schools all offer undergrad majors in economics, but that's as close as you'll get to undergrad "business" classes at those places.

Elon has a respected UG business program. You have a great shot there. Probably a match.

Could Elon possibly be a safety for me

Close but I think not. The 40-45% admittance works against you even though all your stats are very good.

The quantity of your ECs doesn't matter as much as the quality. I think you're underestimating yourself. And your ACT score is "stellar," but obviously test scores alone cannot get one into a school. You should try the collegeboard matchmaker on the collegeboard website and other sites like that to narrow your options down.
But I agree with above posters that you shouldn't settle. Just remember to have a balance of schools and you're fine.

Well the one of the colleges that I visited and really liked was Penn, I was wondering if you think that would be an unrealistic reach for me to consider (I wouldnt apply to Wharton)?

Not unrealistic but definitely a reach.

Penn is a reach, but if you're not applying to Wharton then your chances are better. NYU and Fordham are other schools you might want to look at; their business schools are in the rankings. How about west coast schools like USC and UCLA?

go to collegeboard.com and take the college matchmaker quiz. You can fill in as much or as little criteria as you want and it will spit out a whole list of colleges for you and all the info you could ask for.
