The essay for the Common Application has not stated word limit. It just has a 250 words min. As it's looking right now my essay is about 900 words and i don't know just how much would be too much. It's really hard for me to stay within limits like 500 words because that's about one page single spaced and I don't feel that I can say anything trully significant/relevant about myself in such a confined space. Please help. I want to submit my application this week.

I will be glad to help you

oh...well...thanks but i was kindof just wondering what the absolute maximum of words they would accept was. do you have an idea?

900 words is fine. About 2-3 pages double spaced is what they're looking for. If they don't set a maximum then by all means keep typing. Just make sure you put in as much effort in the beginning as you do for the end.

thanks a lot!

I'm in a similar situation. If you keep reading the common app suggests between 250 and 500 words. However, many people go over. Another source says to shoot for about 750 words.
If your essay is perfect how it is, and would lose its heart by being cut down, then leave it at 900, but that is at least half a page longer than what they're used to. So if it can be just as good minus one or two hundred words, cut out the fluff. Otherwise, use your best judgement. There is no strict rule on this. (although you should print preview to make sure that the whole essay was included on the application!! a few years ago there was a bug that cut people off early)

i can't find where it says 250 to 500 words. It's not in the prompt area...

900 words seems a bit lengthy for a personal statement. But if its flawless and there is no possible way of cutting it down without taking meaning away then leave it. However, you have to keep in mind that admissions reads thousands of essays so you don't want to drone on and on if it isn't necessary.
