Need help convincing my mom of the truth. pls. chance me.

Okay, so I have to apply to a couple of schools before my 1st quarter grades come in. And my mom thinks I should apply to Cornell and University of Pennsylvania.

Stats
Gpa: 96.7
Rank;24/287 ( will fall) ( top 10 Percent)

( took Nov. sat- hoping for a better score in math)
Sat 2s;760 USH, 640 Bio, 660 Lit ( she thinks I shouldn't retake these scores)
Ap: APUSH, AP LIT AP BIO- all 5s

Awards:
Ap scholar
National merit commended
NHS
Speech League- placed in the top 10 of a state competition, state semifinalists, qualifier for(catholic) nationals -twice- etc.
Reached rank of distinction
Lettered in Cross Country
Brain Bee- 5th at regionals

ECs;
Speech League
Cross Country
Junior Academy of science
NHS

I think I should apply to NYU and GWU

Or even I got into pitt - honors college so I'm thinking about just going there.
what do you think?

bump.10char.

I would say definitely apply to Cornell since they dont even look at the writing section, your Awards/ECs are good, only problem is ranking but if someone 24th in the class is getting 1500+ on the SAT Im guessing you have a competitive school, just apply its worth the shot

err, my sat scores were
800-cr
590- MATH
760-writing
I’m sorry, I think its because of the way I spaced it.
Oh yes, I do wish both my scores were reversed.

If you like UPenn and Cornell and think you’ll be happy there if you got in, go ahead and apply. You have nice CR & W scores, math is holding you back. Decent ECs, pretty good awards, and solid grades (and good rank; don’t fall too much). You have great credentials for NYU and GW, so applying to places like UPenn and Cornell, with tougher admissions, won’t hurt. It’s ok to have some reaches!

If you’re not a match/science major you’re in great shape.

NYU/GWU - Definitely a running shot. I’d say you get into at least one of these.
Cornell - Low/mid reach. DEFINITELY worth applying to!
Upenn - mid/high reach. Your chances aren’t bad, worth applying to.

Hey, mother of Nil, your son/daughter stands a great chance! Let him/her FREE!

GOOD LUCK!

oh thread, please don’t die…

Actually, I think your chances for Penn and Cornell are very poor, especially since you don’t have a hook. I think like only 1 or 2 percent have less than a 600 on math for either school, and most of those compensate with something else amazing.

I think both Cornell and UPenn would be mid to high reaches, based on your rank and math score, but I still encourage you to apply to them. Besides NYU (match) and GWU (a match/safety school), you would be more competitive at schools like Boston College, Tufts, Bucknell, Wm. and Mary, Lehigh, Colgate, Smith, Colby, and Bates-- to name just a few others. You have a lot of options, given your stats/resume, but I don’t think any ivies are very realistic given your current math score.

NYU has such a dreadful reputation for poor financial aid awards. I think you could consider some LACs and probably get better education for less $.

I really hope your Nov ACT brings you above 600 in Math. That score is like the big anchor on your application. (Although I agree with you that nudging up the 600-range SATIIs is not a bad strategy. I am happier seeing those start with “7”.)

I just hope that you get 700+ on math. Then you are in the running for any of the schools you listed

What are your interests? Why these colleges? With those SAT scores, you will probably need the extra bonus of fantastic “Why college XX?” essays. Only apply to schools that you really like and want to get in.

Like all of the above, if you up your math score, you have more of a shot. It’s a shame so much lies on one test… :frowning:
But really, apply where YOU feel you would thrive and be happy. Not necessarily the best school that you could get into.

Exactly what I’m trying to tell my mom!
I think i should retake those SAt 2s,
and yeah,I’m crossing my fingers that the Nov. sat was at least a 600.
Oh, but money isn’t a problem.
Pitt offered me an honors scholarship with full tuition. so that’s off my plate.

I neither really love these schools nor hate them. which is why I’m not sure i should apply anywhere else. however, I may be manufacturing indifference because I’m terrified of being rejected. I don’t know.

I think it is more important to increase the math score than to retake the subject tests. Unless you are applying to Georgetown, they are only going to look at the top two subject test scores anyway, and both of them are way above your math score. But, as you mentioned, if you don’t want anymore stress and studying for endless tests, just be happy with your honors college acceptance at Pitt.

apply to all, you’re absolutely fine for GW and NYU is a pretty safe bet too. Your grades are good, are you typically weak in math?

Definitely apply to the ivies if you can spare the app fee, you have shot. Your ECs are pretty normal. It seems like your school is decently competitive, do you have a lot of APs offered?
What do you want to study?

I agree with you. I’m waiting to see what the November score might bring( Nov. 23), but I also have to commit pretty soon, nov. 15, if I nt to take a subkect test.
What is my best course of action?

 1. take sat subject tests in bio and spanish - ( not currently taking spanish)
 2. take 1 sat subject test in bio
 3. try to take the sat again, assuming math scores from nov. 23 will be low?

or what else do i do?
help. please?

Try the ACT as well. But unless you get that math score up a lot it’s a very very longshot that you’ll get in.

I tried the ACT.
I got a 29.
Its not my better test.
Yes, i am typically weak in math. My math grade has dragged all my gpas down every single quarter.

jshain, look at last year’s GW RD thread- it is NOT a safety. It could be a match if the applicant visited, interviewed, and acted very interested. NYU is not a real match either, with those skewed SAT scores.

Nil, without a hook, Cornell maybe, Penn, no. Why not apply to at least a few score optional schools, like Middlebury or Bowdoin. [The National Center for Fair & Open Testing | FairTest](http://www.fairtest.org)
