So I am a religious jew which means I need to find a school that has a good Jewish community. My unweighted GPA is about 3.75 and I am shooting for a 32-34 on the ACT. I have a dual curriculum which means I have 5 religious studies classes and 5 general studies classes and I don’t get out of school till 5 or 6 depending on the day not including after school activities. Additionally, I am taking honor and AP classes for my general studies. Also, I started a coding club in my school and I am involved in different youth groups, clubs, and charity work. Unfortunately, I don’t have much of a college fund and I want to go to medical school which means I am going to have hella loans. Do you think I should go to a school like a C.U.N.Y. Honors school for an undergraduate or do you think that will make it hard to get into med school? Do you think I can get into schools like NYU, UCLA, UMD? DO you have any school suggestions?
If you are not a CA resident, the UC’s give no financial aid to OOS students. Can you pay $60,000/year? If not cross UCLA off your list.
Start with your cheap in-state options then build out from there. Look for a premed advisor or premed club at your SUNY and CUNY options and ask questions.
An acceptance from a school you cannot afford does nothing. You can get loans for med school, but there are no large student loans for undergrad. The maximum freshman federal student loan is 5500, otherwise the parents must borrow or at least cosign. If your family is low income, need based aid could be added to that loan amount, and merit aid would depend on your stats.
With your projected ACT, you would likely get nice merit from Muhlenberg. They have a big percentage of Jewish students ( one of the highest around) and have a strong pre-med program
@Tali31401 You have to go to an inexpensive option for undergrad and get the best possible GPA for premed. Plenty of future doctors attend instate public options. You can only take out ($5500 as a freshman, $6500 as a sophomore, $7500 junior, $7500 senior) as a student. Your parents would have to take out loans on your behalf if your were going to try for more money which isn’t recommended. Can you afford a CUNY?
The CUNY honor college, Macaulay Honors College, has a fairly low tuition but, will it be hard to transfer into a good medical program?
Cast a wide net in terms of where you apply then see where you get in and what is affordable.
You’re OOS for Calif, so going to a Calif school as a premed is a big negative.
What about Tulane?
How much will your parents pay each year?

CUNY honors is fine. It won’t hurt you at all when applying to med school. Med schools won’t care that you went to a CUNY. Get great grades, score well on the MCAT, get some medically related ECs, shadow some doctors, and ask your profs if you can help them with their research.
Once we know how much your parents will pay each year, we can better advise you.
Brandeis, of course. Sends tons of students to med school and has a full kosher dining hall, to boot.
If you live in NY then look into Stonybrook
