I'm going to be joining Emory this fall as a sophomore transfer student.

A few months ago, when I was applying to Emory, my plan was to go to Emory College of Arts and Sciences for a year and then transfer to the B-School to get my BBA degree, concentrating in Accounting and Finance, along with a CS minor.

After speaking with my friends about it, and telling them that my next goal would be to get an MBA, they discouraged me from going for the BBA degree. They were telling me that it's not worth my time to get a BBA from Emory if I was going to ultimately get an MBA.

The reason why I'm having a tough time making this decision is because I don't want to lose the wonderful opportunity of joining Emory's prestigious BBA program.

My second plan right now is getting a BS in Computer Science and Math (Joint major) and a minor in Economics (At least something similar to Business; might help me when I hope to get an MBA).

You might ask me what I want to do. To be honest, I don't mind, and either decision is okay with me. However, I do want to have some kind of "Business qualification" eventually. (Finance or Accounting or Marketing, etc.) Will the MBA give me that knowledge?

I simply do not know what to do at this point. I need to make a decision soon, considering I'll lose time if I wait a semester to decide.

I figured that I might ask you guys for some suggestions.

Thank you wujames! As you said, I’m not so much worried about taking the same classes for my MBA as I am about missing this wonderful opportunity.

Basically it comes down to whether an:

Emory BBA w/Accounting + Finance concentrations + CS Major > BS CS + BS Math (Joint Major) + Econ Minor

for an individual who hopes to get an MBA eventually.

However, I’m a sophomore transfer student, so actually, I need to make a decision fast in order to graduate on time.

I will be joining Emory with 34 credit hours and I will be taking 18 semester hours in the fall. I’ve planned it so that I will complete most of the pre-business school requirements in the fall. I think I’ll only need two more pre-requisites after that.

But still, your feedback and insight is helping a lot.

Right now, I’m leaning towards joining the Business School than I am towards the CS/Math Major, Econ Minor.

You won’t get into an elite MBA program unless you worked at an elite company before (general rule of thumb to follow).

You won’t work for an elite company unless you went to a target school (for Emory, that’s Goizueta - well, semi-target at least) or if you really stuck out in what is generally considered a difficult major (engineering, Math, CS, Physics, etc) at a semi target school (like Emory). (general rule of thumb to follow).

That’s pretty general and I’m sure everyone is going to chime in and cite their friend’s uncle’s brother’s daughter’s friend as an exception. But it gives you something to think about. Play to your strengths. But, ultimately, people at the top characteristically never had BBAs.
