Need help deciding (Rice vs Northwestern)

Well, as far as name recognition goes, many teachers spoke highly of Rice's science when I told them the schools to which I was applying...and I'm in MD. Also, name recognition matters to three people - you, grad school, and recruiters. Rice's programs are very good...even if your neighbor hasn't heard about it, I'm sure a med school, grad school, or employer will have.

actually i think this past year, rice moved up on the rankings and is now ranked higher than NW (US News) i'm not positive but i think i read something about it... anyone know how to check??

catzonfirefosho-
US NEWS:
Northwestern and Washington University in St. Louis are at #11;
Rice is at #17

yeah haha i just looked that up.. i dunno where i saw that rice was higher.. sorry.. skewed info

A tough decision indeed. Perhaps the Magic 8-Ball can help recolve this matter. Haha. On a more serious note, either school would be a great place to go, however Rice is probably one of the best deals out there.

Seriously, the name recognition thing is a pain in the butt, but the truth is that everyone here has heard of Rice, and this where you'll be 10 months a year if you come. All the grad schools and professional schools have heard of Rice. If the only thing that you are worrying about is the opions of your high school friends and LI neighbors, I personally think that's a silly reason not to come.
I hope that you come visit and see what it's like here. We need more NY-ers like you to do the right thing and come to Rice! :)

I'm from TX(Close to Houston), and Houston really is a special place...Pretty ugly, bad air, etc...but I love it. Rice Village is cool...always people around, always stuff going on. If you have reservations about the city itself(As a northerner may), don't.

One more thing...Rice tuition goes up big-time, I think, next year. Should erase any discrepancy in the affordability of the two schools.

Rice tuition goes up 12%, Northwestern will also rise, but proabably not as much. Northwestern's tuiton will remain higher, however this may be irrelevant depending on your financial aid.

Ah...I was under the impression that the hike in Rice tuition was considerably more than 12%.

So, yeah...I was wrong. Rice will probably be considerably cheaper.

I did not even apply for financial aid LOL.

Rice's best value ranking is kind of disappointing. Still high, but pretty much all its competitors beat it out.

According to my NWU fin aid package, total cost for attending NWU in fall '05 is $49,190

I hope Rice will be way cheaper :)

And I thought Georgetown was expensive; Harvard Law School is but $5,000 more.
