Hey, I am trying to decided between UAB (university of alabama at birmingham) or Auburn university. My major is graphic design and i am trying to find out which one may be the best for me. I know Uab is more cutting edge to auburn's more traditional program. So i was wondering what other people had to say about them. Please do not post info about other colleges, I can only go in state and these are the one's i am deciding from! Thanks for all the help and info!

I don’t know anything about graphic design, and to be honest, I thought that was something you only went to two-year schools for. It’s interesting that UAB’s graphic design program is under the Art Department and Auburn’s is under a separate college with architecture, but I guess that’s what you meant with the differences in approach.

It seems to you me that you need to ask UAB and Auburn where their graphic design graduates go to work (specific jobs, specific companies, etc). Go to the school where the future work potential jives better with what you want.

I have been to both campuses…

I would choose Auburn for several reasons…

1) Auburn will provide the full campus experience. It’s beautiful and has all that you need. UAB is like a school built around the medical school and medical center. It doesn’t seem very campus-like.

2) UAB is great for those in certain majors (such as pre-health - because of the great med school there), but campus life is not that great. My son’s GF goes there, and says that if her boyfriend (my son) wasn’t at Bama (50 miles away), she’d be bored on weekends. She goes to Bama games & activities with my son because no one goes to the UAB games.

3) Auburn has a better developed alumni group in high-tech fields.

feenotype that’s funny that you thought it was something that you get at a 2year college. But I actually got to see a prof. at uab. I have already gone to auburn, so now i have compared. Mom2collegekids. I really do love auburn! WAR EAGLE! but i want a good education and the “campus experience” is not a huge issue, uab to me feels like a campus, but you can then go into the city and feel away from school. I thank y’all bother replying to me. But fyi i am leaning more to uab b/c of the resources that are up there than auburn. Because of the art museums, and birmingham is big on advertising!

:)

Glad that you like UAB. :)

Have fun!

That’s cool. What kind of graphics do you want to design and how to do you want to make a living from it?

I think it is funny that you are not already diametrically opposed to one or the other, considering their epic rivalry that extends beyond the realm of sport. If that really isn’t a big deal for you, I’m sure it will be in your blood by the time you spend your first day on campus at either school. Like others in this thread have said, I would go to Auburn. I think UAB is more culturally diverse, and that is about it.

I would choose UAB, just because I love Birmingham. I’m not to college yet, but I would rather go to shows at Workplay or eat at Surin on five points south than go to football games or frat parties any day. But hey, neither experience is better or worse- just a matter of personal taste :)

O and the rivalry is really only between UA Tuscaloosa (Crimson Tide) and Auburn. The UAB Blazers sort of get left out.

You are absolutely correct. I was thinking of UA Tuscaloosa when I saying UAB… Whoops.

sry it’s so late getting back to y’all. lot of homework. But to feenotype i would like to work at some company in the city. I know Birmingham, atlanta and Nashville are the places to go in the south! Lol glad someone was able to correct you manhattan cuz auburn is in my blood! BIG TIME! And to hondaveg, being at jeff state and having to drive to valleydale everyday, i have become to love birmingham also. I used to think that i wouldn’t like the city but i do enjoy. I am from a small town and country atmosphere so i guess that i like the difference. But i do love the football parties, like you don’t care for frat parties.

The student life at UAB is quickly improving with the opening of new dormitories and the much praised new recreation center. Also, I believe that the UAB has received permission from the city government to close streets that abut the campus to help create a more cohensive feel to the university campus.

And some UAB sports are well attended, such as the women’s and men’s basketball games. The men’s coach is the former head coach at Indiana, where he took a team deep into the NCAA tournament.
