Or just getting opinions on what we have so far.

BTW I'm posting this on behalf of my sister in law for her son, my nephew:

His stats:
He's a junior at a small charter school in Texas. They don't rank, GPA is probably a 3.5 maybe higher when weighted.
Taken the SAT once will take again in April, plus take the ACT
Reading: 690
Math: 620
Writing: 730
He's an Eagle Scout, has a presidential service award, has black belt in Tae Kwon Do, plays baseball, coached baseball for younger kids. He's outdoorsy, likes backpacking, rock climbing.
Criteria for schools:
small-medium sized, good reputation, in the South/Southwest/Midwest, doesn't know his major yet, and he'd like to maybe have a shot at playing baseball there, so a Div 3 school.
Money isn't an issue, he'd only be eligible for merit aid.

The list so far:

Hendrix, Arkansas
Mary Hardin Baylor, TX
Luther College, Iowa
Westminster College,
Sewanee: University of the South TN
Truman State University
Harding University
Southwestern, TX
Austin College, TX

Any suggestions would be appreciated. He's not looked at any schools yet, he does have sisters who go to large state schools and that doesn't appeal to him.

Beloit (WI) - if he’s looking for a more conservative, Christian oriented environment, probably not the best place for him
Denison (OH) - May be a bit too far east for his taste
College of Wooster (OH) - Ditto
Gustavus Adolphus (MN)
St. Olaf College (MN)
Christopher Newport University (VA) - improving small-medium sized public school

The only one I’m familiar with is Truman State. It has a good reputation in our high school, and one of my
daughter’s friends is in her senior year there and has had a great experience. We’ll be looking at it for my son.

he should take a look at Arizona State - Go Devils! (If he can get the gpa and the SAT up a little - maybe Barrett - the Honors college!) Best of luck.

I am glad Hendrix is on his list. I think he would find it challenging academically and it’s hard to beat the location for access to outdoor recreation. There is great backpacking, hiking, rock climbing, etc., a short drive away and the Ozarks are only a couple of hours north.

When people ask for suggestions on CC, very rarely does anyone ever suggest a school that is not in the Fiske guide. There are several Midwest LACs within Fiske that have not yet been mentioned…go get the guide. It is a fantastic resource.

Let me be the first to mention Earlham in Indiana. Although I have no idea what its rep is in the south, and it probably isn’t as well situation for his kind of recreation as Hendrix or Sewanee.

Thank you all for your responses! I’ll forward this all to my sister in law as well as suggest the class of '15 link.
Trinity and Rhodes were meant to be on the list actually, I must have missed them when I cut and pasted.

I think if you asked my brother he’d say merit was needed, if you asked my sister in law she’d say it would be nice… They are also pretty confident he’ll bring up his test scores.

I saw Mary Hardin Baylor on the list. It’s not just a christian affiliated like Hendrix. It is a Christian with a capitol C school.

From the school’s mission statement:
“The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor prepares students for leadership, service, and faith-informed discernment in a global society. Academic excellence, personal attention, and broad-based scholarship distinguish this Christ-centered learning community”

A school with only historic ties to the founding church would not include the words Christ or faith in its US News entry.

To the OP, Barry College might be a possibility as it shares some characteristics with Sewanee. However the workload isn’t as demanding, students tend to come from the central GA to eastern AL region, and it’s a much more Christian environment (gorgeous campus though). If merit aid is important, he should get quite a bit of money from the school.
