Help! I'm looking for a college/university with a strong art department, strong language department, and an extensive study abroad program.
I plan to major in art and minor in whatever language I can while studying abroad as much as possible.
Thanks for any suggestions

Stats
3.8 unweighted gpa
28 ACT
taking spanish IV and french I
taking A.P. studio art and graphic design
rest of my classes are A.P. and honors

There are a number of schools that will have what you are looking for. I would stay away from schools like Alfred that no one has ever heard of. These are usually just going to take your money and give you a useless degree.

Thank you Erin’s Dad! Also USNWR’s “Great Schools Great Prices”, “Princeton Review’s Best 373” & “Fiske College Guide 2011”.

Castlegirl, urban, rural, suburban or size of school? 2,000 students? 5,000 students? A large National University with Division I Athletics & name recognition & 10,000+ students?

If you could see yourself at an all women’s college, you should consider Smith. Their art department (history and studio) is excellent, and they have a very well developed Junior Year abroad program. Good financial aid; great setting with Amherst, UMass Amherst, Mount Holyoke and Hampshire College nearby.

Erin’s Dad: I live in Sandpoint, ID and my family’s fiscal situation is a little tight so financial aid is a must.

TheresaCPA: I’m thinking I want to go to Europe and South America more than the East.

SLUMON: Thanks for the lists. I don’t really care what size of school as long as it has quality art and language departments. As to the location, I’m from a small town (population is somewhere around 6,000) but I won’t have a car so a city with a good transit system might be better for me. Name recognition isn’t a big deal because when it comes to art either you’re an artist or you’re not.

Classof2015: Smith does look like a possibility, especially since I have family in Boston. However, I kinda want to study abroad before junior year.

mom2collegekids: I just took the SAT and I’m hoping that I’ll score higher on that. My parents will be paying little if any of my initial tuition and most likely not contribute to the cost of my study abroad semesters.

Financial aid is based on your family’s income and assets. It is also based on a college’s ability to help you. Most colleges don’t have much aid to give.

Money may be tight in your family, but they may still be expected to pay. Do you know what your EFC will likely be?

My SAT scores came back as CR-740 M-580 W-600 not extraordinary but decent.
My parents EFC looks to be around 10,000 if not more because my mom inherited $90,000 last year and apparently you don’t count that until the next year.
I recently toured the Oregon colleges and have decided that I want a medium school(3,000 to 15,000) in a sunny location preferably urban.

The # 20 regional college might as well be ranked the #270 national college. Seriously, I hope you don’t think that number 20 means anything when it is followed by “Regional College.” That is like saying the #1 community college should be taken seriously as an academic institution.

Maybe do a little research on colleges that have May terms or January terms. In a special one month term a student only takes 1 class for the month. Often there will be options for a course abroad.
As an example, look at St Olaf’s J-term(this is only a partial listing):

Art 106: Draw from Nature in the Bahamas
Art 246: New York Art Interim
Education 170: Schools and Urban Communities
Education 378: Multicultural Education Hawaii

Pol Sci 240: Political Identities in Slovenia
Religion 243: Living Faith: Theology and Practice at Holden Village
Spanish 233: Intermediate Spanish II in Ecuador

Thanks twomules! I love the idea of January Term. It sounds like it would be a very valuable experience. I’m looking at Saint Mary’s College of California right now and they have a January term.
