Hi @co2023 I am really not sure of the answer to that. According to the UVM website, average class size is 33, but I think that is for the entire University (which includes the Business school, the Nursing School, etc., not specific to the College of Arts and Sciences. I do know that in the presentation we attended for Global Studies, which was held in an Anthropology classroom, it was a very small room with tables in a semi circle and maybe 20 seats. There are also special Living/Learning Communities you can join that have small seminars. Here is the link to The College of Arts and Sciences. Perhaps you can reach out to them. http://catalogue.uvm.edu/undergraduate/artsandsciences/
If you decide to expand your search to the South, take a look at Eckerd College. They are centered around service learning and have a service learning dorm. They are well connected to the community,(https://www.eckerd.edu/about/community/) and are dedicated to social justice and stewardship of the environment. Spring break trips are service learning trips. Intellectually, they have a Phi Beta Kapa chapter, a number of Ford, Fulbright, NOAA Hollings and Goldwater scholars. There is a new peace corps prep program: www.eckerd.edu/peacecorps/ There is a Diplomat in Residence and numerous courses and projects related to social justice on the local and international level, including the UN and the Hague.
Another consideration would be Jesuit schools that are very centered around social justice. You said no to the West Coast, but I know someone at University of San Francisco that speaks very highly of their performing arts and social justice major. There are other colleges that might be of interest- Fordham and Holy Cross.
