Need help finding a school

I'm in a bit of a bind in that I have no earthly clue where I want to apply for college. I'm a senior and should probably start soon so please give me some suggestions of where I could get in/what I would like!

stats:
2260 SAT (770 Math, 760 CR, 730 Writing)
93.6 GPA (weighted)
School does not provide rank (prestigious private school)
SAT IIs - 770 Math 2, 750 Bio, 750 Lit
APs - 5 Bio, 5 Calc AB, 5 Language, 5 Lit, 5 Euro, 5 Chemistry
Taking AP Physics, Multivariable Calculus, AP English, AP US History, and Spanish
Have a pretty solid essay + great recs

ECs:
4 year soccer player
2 year swimmer
summer programs at duke and yale
founder and creator of literary club at school
big into writing, have submitted pieces for school papers etc
national honor society
ap scholar w/ distinction
student government - class pres freshman year, student body vice president senior year
tutored for 4 years (average of ~4 hours a week)
admissions ambassador at my school for two years. lead interviews + tours around campus

1st generation American (both parents from Slovenia). Slovenian was first language
mother diagnosed with cancer sophomore year.. died junior year. definitely affected achievement etc (writing personal statement + college counselor is writing about it too)

factors:
preferably southeast / northeast.. not big into the mid atlantic region
med sized/small school. really not that important as long as the school isn't huge
prestige is semi important
interested in solid writing/business/premed programs... not sure which i want so preferably all three are good

Brown and Vanderbilt are two of my favorites so far. Suggestions for safeties/reaches and where I should look at??

Have you looked at University of Chicago?

I’m not a big fan of having to go through a core curriculum, but more importantly Chicago doesn’t seem like the “funnest place” to go. Same goes for Emory. I realize this sounds childish, but would like to go to a school with atleast a little campus buzz, sports etc

Understandable. :stuck_out_tongue:
University of Wisconsin - Madison might interest you, though it might not have the prestige you’re looking for.
How about Boston College or Notre Dame?

What’s you UW GPA? How much can your family afford?

In the Southeast, how about:

Wake Forest
UNC Chapel Hill
UVA
Tulane
U Miami (FL)
UGA
UFL

These are not all geographically desirable but may be worth a look: Brandeis, Bucknell, Columbia, Johns Hopkins. All have Business, Creative Writing and Bio/Biomed programs.

if looking for strong premed UAB! Welcome

wonderful premed advising from freshman year…mcat prep, mock interviews, shadowing, seminars

you would qualify for blazer elite which would bring your costs to about 10-14K per year. (if national merit, acheivement or hispanic scholar then its a full ride)

oos coa is 20-24K per year

tier 1 research university

11k undergrad
urban campus

ranked 5th for diversity, 11th for happiest students

great honors programs!

(uab med school is highly ranked)

hey everyone, thanks for the suggestions.
my family is willing to spend around ~$30,000 a year, so hopefully I would be able to get some financial aid or some sort of scholarship at certain schools.
my unweighted GPA is a 3.8.

could anyone tell me my chances of getting into the following schools:

Brown
Vanderbilt
UNC
UVA
UGA (Honors)
John Hopkins
Boston College
Georgetown
Princeton (ha)

thanks again!

anyone have any input?

Best bet is to search the Common Data Set for those schools online. Look at section C of the stats as that summarizes admissions info. Good luck.

To varying degrees, you have a chance at all of them. Princeton, Brown, Georgetown and UVA are crapshoots (the first 2 more than the last 2). UNC is tough out of state but you have a realistic chance. The Common Data Sets will give you an idea of where you stand. If your school has Naviance, check out how students from your school with similar stats have done in the past.

UGA should be a safety with your stats and honors seems likely. If you are in-state (assumed with ATL in your user name), with the Hope Scholarship, it’s also a financial safety.

I don’t think any of the schools (other than UGA) are financial safeties. That might be important if you want to keep the cost below $30K and don’t qualify for enough need based aid. If you’re satisfied with UGA, then great, but you might want to look for other financial safeties (schools that would give you merit money with your stats). I’ll throw out Pitt as a school with very strong pre-med programs (neuroscience, anything bio related), writing and a decent business school (plus D-1 sports [soon ACC] and good social life) that might give you full tuition with your stats.

This is a good list:
Brown
Vanderbilt
UVA
John Hopkins
Boston College
Georgetown
UGA (just for safety)

Maybe throw in one or two more targets if you want to be safe.

I think your list is reach-heavy. What is your unweighted GPA and rank?

U. Richmond as a match, Elon as a low match/safety.

Richmond? Elon? Really?

Please read this section again and tell me how you came up with those two?

“preferably southeast / northeast… not big into the mid atlantic region
med sized/small school. really not that important as long as the school isn’t huge
prestige is semi important
interested in solid writing/business/premed programs… not sure which i want so preferably all three are good”

Richmond would be decent as a solid match. Elon is more of a B student school but it’s on the rise. Not sure if they’d throw money at you.

Might look at Holy Cross-one of the better pre-med programs with fantastic med school placement list. On the East Coast, Duke, Hopkins, Holy Cross, and Tufts are strong. HC has several alumni who are med school presidents, a Nobel Prize winner. Holy Cross has new science building also.

you can look into Davidson College, I don’t know about their pre-med/business.

My school doesn’t provide rank and my unweighted GPA is a 3.8 (i think it’s around a 3.84 exactly, not sure though). I’m looking into all of the schools suggested so far… not a big fan of any of them so far to be honest though.

And when you say reach heavy, what schools besides Brown and Princeton are far reaches?

I checked Naviance, and if the past acceptances from my school indicate anything, my stats are good for all except the Ivy’s.

I realize my GPA isn’t exactly as “elite” as the schools I’m looking at, but I’m hoping they look at personal circumstance and change their initial gut reaction to the stats. Is that totally unrealistic to expect? Should I be aiming lower? Keep in mind that I’m 100% fine with going UGA, hopefully honors, and I don’t need any other safeties.

Current list (after much research)

Brown (far reach)
Princeton (ditto)
Vanderbilt
Georgetown
UVA
UNC
UGA (Honors) (i’m in state so this is also a financial safety… won’t get a better deal anywhere else)
John Hopkins
Amherst
Wash U in StL
…Emory
Duke

I don’t think anyone said far reaches. Those are reaches for a number of reasons: low acceptance %age; application essay, recs and ECs being very important. As long as you are OK with UGA then it’s a good list. And from your list it looks like prestige is more than semi-important.
