I just found out recently that auditions for the first musical of the fall season at Fredonia are the second day of classes 0_o It's Rocky Horror Picture Show!! So, I'd like to audition with a song that's from a rock-type musical. However, I'm having trouble finding a good song or show for that matter. Any suggestions would be REALLY helpful (I'm a mezzo-soprano). Thanks so much!!

do you know if they require an Musical Theatre song? I would definately look into that because for auditions for Broadway you'd most likely audition with just a rock/folk song, and not a "rock/folk musical theatre song," and your school might try to copy that system.

Alfiesm, that is a good question you raised. I don't know what Jen's school wants for the auditions. But it is good to have both rock/pop from musicals songs and rock/pop songs that are not from musicals. Different auditions require different things. I know my daughter is required to have both these kinds in her repertoire.

Somone I know who has been in the program for a couple years now said that they would most likely require a song from a rock musical. The only one that comes to mind is Rent, because I'm not sure what other shows are considered rock.

I'm not saying songs from the following shows would be right for Rocky Horror Picture Show as I have not seen that musical but since you said you are not sure what musicals are considered of the more rock genre of music....here are some:

Bat Boy
Hair
Tommy
Jesus Christ Superstar
RENT
Godspell
Pippin
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Spring Awakening
Bare
Chess

thoughts on possible "rock-type" musicals: little shop of horrors, spring awakening (although i don't know if the music is available anywhere), fame, footloose, and of course rent(as already said).

I thought of Zombie Prom too but the sheet music is not available for purchase; I don't think. I think it can only be rented when renting scripts.

Another note: Make sure to cross check this list with the "Do not Audition Lists" on another thread. As I understand it there are song choices that will hurt you in auditions.

This poster is auditioning for a production, NOT to get into college. In this instance, I do not think the "do not audition lists" apply very much. The choice of audition material when you are seeking a role, should be suited to the role you are seeking. Auditioning for college, and not a role, is a very different experience when it comes to choosing audition material, in my view. Example....singing from RENT is not suited to a BFA audition, but it can be suited to auditioning to get into Rocky Horror Picture Show.

When I originally was giving you examples of musicals with a rock genre, I was thinking of mentioning The Me Nobody Knows. I can't advise you on your song as I don't know you at all and also I have never seen Rocky Horror Picture Show. However, the song from The Me Nobody Knows would be less common than Take Me or Leave Me and so in that regard, may be a better choice. If you have a voice teacher, try out a few possibilities and get feedback as to which song shows you off the best.

Yeah, I stopped my voice lessons a while ago so I could work a lot during the summer. I came upon that show and I really liked the song, but I'm not sure if its 'rock' enough so I'm just a little nervous about it. I know you can't advise me on a song because you don't know me, but if you suggested some songs I could listen to them and decide that part myself.

btw- thanks everyone for their suggestions!

Jen....that would be hard for me to do because I don't know Rocky Horror, nor the parts you would be up for and so it is hard to gear suggestions when I don't know what is similar to a role/show I don't know as well, on top of the fact that I don't know what song would sell your strengths. Do you belt well? Are you striving for upbeat or ballad? From the rock musicals I listed, find some songs that seem good for your voice that also correlate with the roles/songs in Rocky Horror...similar in type and voice range. Once you pick those, sing a few for someone you know....like your mom? and ask her which one shows you off the best since she knows what you are good at. You might sing all three songs well but one may just sell you better. Someone who knows you in real time and can see your presentation and hear you, could at least tell you which seems to be best for you. So, listen to songs for Rocky Horror, read the role descriptions, listen to songs from the musical rock genre and select a few that correlate with RH and are good for your voice/strengths, and present them for a parent or friend and ask them which one showed you off the best.

Life Alfie says, the current professional practice for auditioning for rock shows (Rent, Spring Awakening, and many upcoming shows and workshops) is to do an actual rock song - so if your school allows it, I'd definitely do that!!! For Rocky Horror, basically all the girls except Janet sing full-out rock (Magenta, Columbia, and the phantoms) - and Janet has to do that and also sound more "traditional MT" earlier in the show. So decide whether you're more a Janet or more an "everyone else" (for Janet, listen to "Dammit Janet," "Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me," and "The Floor Show" to get her whole vocal vibe). Then look at rock stuff - old-school choices that are good are Heart and Pat Benatar - more modern stuff is Fergie, some Gwen Stefani, etc. You should show off a "growly" rock vocal quality if you have it.

Certainly if your school allows it, sing a rock song that is NOT limited to being from a rock musical! That is common practice. I thought you said you needed a song from a rock musical and were asking what musicals are in that genre. But many auditions require and/or allow you to sing a rock song not from a musical! That would surely open up the choices for you and you ought to have rock songs and pop songs in your audition book anyway.
