Hi, I am a rising junior attempting to put a list of colleges together. Seeing as both my parents went to state schools and I'm the oldest I was wondering if I could get some opinions.

I live in Alabama.
I got to the Alabama School of Math and Science (it's a boarding school that does college level coursework and selects students from all over the state.)
I took the SAT as a sophmore and got a 1950. I'm taking it again to hopefully raise it, seeing as I had mono at the time.

Coursework: 4.0
Taking AP Chem, AP Physics C, AP Environmental, AP BC Calculus, and possible AP French before graduation.
I also have will have taken 5 years of Latin and one year past BC Calc.
Hardest possible with 6/7 classes per term and double languages.

EC's
Physics research with UC-Berkeley
Student Ambassador
Varsity Volleyball (3 years)
Show Choir (we tour for a few weeks each summer and perform)
NHS
BETA Community Service Club

Award's
National Latin Exam Gold Medal (twice) Summa Cum Laude (once, it's third)
Outstanding Sophmore overall
and various other little things that most likely don't matter that much

So here's my list so far...

Rice
Vanderbilt
Rhodes
Davidson
Georgia Tech
GeorgeWashington

I know I should have some safeties but I do NOT want to go to school in AL. Any suggestions?

I'm assuming you want to do something science-related?

Davidson and Rhodes probably are matches, but if you want a few more LAC-like matches, you could try Macalester, Kenyon, Smith, Whitman, Grinnell, Occidental, etc. Or on a more university-like note, Richmond or Tulane?

Also - you have plenty of safety options outside of Alabama. How about a neighboring state school, such as FSU? Then there are also the lesser known privates, such as Knox.

I want to go into either chemistry or physics. I was thinking about clemson as a safety, but I would probably go to a random state rather than Florida or Mississippi. However, I am going to apply to auburn just in case (plus all my senior credits, and all my math credits from highschool would transfer)

Clemson would be a good one.

EDIT: Another idea would be Lehigh, as a match. They're looking to diversify, so a Southern applicant would have a really strong chance.

Furman would be a good match for you. A little easier to get into than Davidson or Rice (which can be considered reaches for everyone). Clemson is a good safety. College of Charleston is another one to consider. They have a good chemistry department. Any reason Emory isn't on your list?

Why not add Sewanee to your list? (www.sewanee.edu) They have several excellent merit scholarships (some that provide full tuition), science faculty that are very hungry for good students and are very dedicated to the science majors they get, and a wonderful choir. It would also give you another alternative closer to home.
