Hi! I will be a senior next year, so I am looking at schools to apply to. So far I have a list, but I feel as though I am lacking in match schools.
Reach: UC Berkeley
UMich (Instate) (parents both alumni, and sister goes there now)
Match: UW Madison (visited and loved)
Safety: Michigan State University
University of South Carolina (visited and loved)
Florida State University
Indiana University (visited and loved)
University of Nebraska
My intended major is business, however I am also interested in hospitality management possibly (but not a required major at schools I am applying to). I have a 33 on my ACT, a 3.9 UW GPA, 4.056 W GPA, 6 AP courses by the time high school is over, 5 Honors Courses. I have 300+ hours of community service, I am on Student Congress (voted as treasurer for next year, NHS, Key Club for three years, Unified Sports (help disabled kids play sports) for two years, Tennis four years (3 years varsity) and golf four years (three varsity years and captain for senior year).
Please let me know what you think of my list and if you have any match recommendations. Thanks!
Budget? EFC?
Any geographical preferences?
I’m not sure you need more schools (assuming the ones on your list are affordable). Just apply early enough so you get some acceptances in hand by December.
@Gumbymom @happy1 Most of the schools on the list are affordable due to merit scholarships I think I could get. As far as geographical preferences, I do not have any. I know I do not really need more schools on my list, but if I could find any more match schools rather than schools that may be more safety, I would like to look into those. Thanks for your input!
So UCB is one of the outliers in terms of affordability and merit scholarships? No FA and little to no merit scholarships as an OOS applicant.
Cornell could be a reach (has Dyson business school as well as a great hotel administration school).
@Gumbymom yes, I guess I should clarify that the merit scholarships would be from the schools on my safety list, not UCB. Any match ideas?
If you are talking about Chapel Hill, it is a reach for you due to your out of state status. Adding Cornell is a good idea- you can fill out the NPC to get an estimate regarding any financial aid. Aside from that your list looks good. You can add one of the other NC schools as more of a safety with possible merit… NC State, UNC-W, etc. You may also get decent merit from Tulane if you show a lot of interest.
One more thing… can you afford to be full pay at Wisconsin? If not- it goes into the reach category. You can probably get some merit to UConn… what will your parents pay?
@twogirls I think you may have read North Carolina instead of South Carolina. I am not interested in UNC. Also, I probably would not pay full to Wisconsin, so I am hoping for a business school scholarship.
Ah yes LOL there is a reason for that… sorry! The U of South Carolina is an excellent choice. My family member goes there and loves it. What about Clemson and College of Charleston?
Are your chances for a scholarship good at Wisconsin? I am not familiar…
I think I could possibly get a scholarship, but I am not sure how much it would be. @twogirls I toured south carolina and loved it!
I haven’t looked at Clemson or College of Charleston too much. I definitely prefer a larger school feel and prefer more of an urban campus, but don’t mind more campus feels like Indiana.
My relative who attends SC received merit … glad you loved it!
@twogirls They do offer really great merit scholarships! What major are they?
I know she was very interested in marine biology and I believe that this is her major.
May want to add Bama for the free tuition and solid safety. Maybe add a few more solid bus schools - Ohio State (may start a family fued though!!).
