Hi,

I am having trouble finding safety schools that I have a high chance of getting into and are affordable (10K~20K) or give generous financial aid.
I go to an International School outside of America but I am a U.S. citizen.
I am half Korean, half Filipino.

Some stats:
GPA - 4.14 (ranking either 1 or 2 out of 17)
SAT - 2180 ( 670 R 760 M 750 W Essay: 12) I might retake. Still deciding.
ACT - 31 (35 E 32 R 29 M 26 S Essay: 8)
SATII - Chem 640, Math 2C 670 (going to retake) I am also going to take biology and literature. Thinking about retaking chem. Going to push scores up to mid 700s.

Major - Biochemistry/molecular biology

Could you suggest schools that have strong science departments?
I also favor small schools that have a lot of diversity.

Thank you so much.

You may not be able to match all your desires. Most schools I know of that are that inexpensive are midwestern, northern tier schools which probably don’t have much diversity. For instance Bemidji State is ~$15K/year. [Tuition & Fees - Undergraduate Admissions - Bemidji State University](Tuition & Aid | Admissions | Bemidji State University)

Yeah, that’s what I figured. Are there any good schools reaching 30~40K with a high rate of financial aid or grants?

For example, a 3.5 GPA and 1400 SAT CR+M gets you full tuition at University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa, which leaves a remaining cost of attendance of around $15,000 per year (plus presumably travel costs). Some other schools may be even less expensive. The smaller Huntsville and Birmingham campuses also have big automatic merit scholarships.

Some smaller schools like Truman State and University of Minnesota - Morris have list price costs of attendance of under $25,000 per year, so not much financial aid or scholarships may be able to bring the cost down to your limit (check the net price calculators).

Then there are schools like South Dakota State University whose list price is under $20,000 per year.

Curious - do you go to a UWC?

Check out Macalester and Earlham Colleges. Both are medium-small LACs with great communities, and they are two of the most international colleges in the country (Earlham has ~200 international students from 77 countries). Earlham is a bit more sciency than Macalester, but both are great choices.

Since I go to Earlham, I can tell you more if you’re interested.

Since you’re a citizen, you are not an int’l. You’re a citizen abroad.

Are you saying that your parents will pay $10k-20k per year.

Financial safeties for students who don’t have residency for a state school is an issue. It sounds like your family can pay for room, board, books and transportation, but you would need a FULL tuition scholarship to pay for tuition. There aren’t many safeties that can provide THAT MUCH aid. To find financial safeties when you need a lot of aid may require relaxing some of your req’ts.

UCB has provided a link to schools that would give you merit scholarships. Yes, Alabama would give you a free tuition scholarship for your stats. That would be a financial safety for you. Alabama has a brand new mega-sized Science and Engineering Complex.

It sounds like you might be pre-med. Are you?

Be sure to apply to at least 2 financial safeties. These are schools that you know FOR SURE will give you the aid you need. if you’re not sure how much a school will give you then it is NOT a safety.

ucbalumnus: Thank you so much for the list! Helps a lot.
ECAdmStudent: Eh no, my school is a small international school in Korea.
mom2collegekids: Somewhere around 20K is probably okay and no, I plan to be a biochemist.

Thank you all for the help! (:

Truman State University in Missouri, tuition + fees + room + board is about $21,000 for out-of-state students. It’s one of the two most selective (in terms of ACT range) public universities in the state, comparable to most public flagships.

Truman was my daughters safety and as it turns out we drop her off there this Saturday.

Some people said she is crazy because she turned down University of Chicago and Wash U in St. Louis to go there. We got no money at either so was going to cost $250,000 over 4 years. Truman gives such awesome merit aid we couldn’t pass on it - she got a complete full ride. She is thrilled to save all of her college fund for Med. School!

If you are not from the midwest it may not appeal because of its location but everyone we talk to says their kids love it there. We shall see very soon.
