Hello college confidential,
I'm currently a sophomore in high school (yes, I know I still have time), and I'm looking for schools that fit my current GPA I have been getting in high school. I'm currently getting a 3.1 GPA from this current year and my freshman year. I took my PLAN test (practice ACT) and got a very low score. However, through lots of studying and tutoring I'm hoping and planning on getting a 20-22. I do have dyslexia (and have all documentation). I live in Wisconsin right now, and I hate the cold winter's here. It has always been my dream to go to a school in California, but I'm hoping that my GPA doesn't stop me from going for my dream. I'm interested in technology and science field. I have some extra-curriculums, such as Head of Volunteer for Service Club, Head of debate club, Student government, Volunteering (2 hours a week), Piano, and Golf team. My price range is around $30,000-$35,000. Now that I gave you a little background about myself, and I what I'm looking for, could you help me with choosing some good schools that fit my range. I'm not just looking at California, I'm looking across the country. I would just really like to be in California. So, if you know any other schools that are worth noting, please tell me! Thank you so much in advance, and I appreciate you helping me out :)!

I think you could get into a better college in other states. Here are some stats to illustrate my point:

University of California Riverside (Ranked 96) - Average ACT: 24 - Average GPA: 3.61 (78.4% accepted)
University of Kansas (Ranked 96) - Average ACT: 24 - Average GPA: 3.4 (91.8% accepted)

There’s just more competition for schools in California.

IF you can get your ACT up to 24 or 26, you’ll have a better chance (that’s 75th - 84th percentile).

You should also take the SAT. Some kids do much better on that.

Also work on getting your GPA up. :)

Since your budget is $30-35k per year, that could also limit your choices. College costs are going up, up, up in Calif.

There are other warm weather states that charge less than Calif. Look at Az, NM, the lower midwest, and the southern states.

Try the Cal State system, as opposed to the UC system. There are a lot of great schools that might be easier to get into with your GPA. They are also cheaper to attend than the UC system.

Sonoma
SF State
Humboldt
CSU Long Beach
CSU Fullerton
CSU San Marcos
San Diego State

and several others if you do your research!

I have friends at SF State that are very happy there, and are intellectually stimulated by the classes and the professors, and the departments seem to work together with a lot of other California schools and companies. One of them got in with a 2.7 GPA and a 1600 SAT, due to hardships like you. Only issue might be housing.

Okay, so it looks slim for California, I guess. Do you guys know any other some-what good schools in warm climate. Heck, just anywhere. I guess, with my low GPA and low ACT scores I just want to get into a school that I would be happy with (Education wise and happiness at the school.) Thanks!

Since you’re only a sophomore, you will bring your scores up (if you try). Rarely do sophomores score their best.

Take the SAT, also.

As for STATE schools…

UArizona
AzSt
LSU
Alabama
Auburn
UCentral Florida
U Southern Florida
ULouisiana
UNewMexico
