I have visited about 15 schools so far with my D. Her basic stats are: 3.9 GPA, SAT 2060, good EC's. She doesn't want to be more than 3 ish hours from home (central NJ) She prefers small LACs since she really has no idea what she'd like to do. So far she has liked Dickinson, Franklin & Marshall, U of Delaware but a bit larger class sizes than she'd like. TCNJ was just ok for her as was Muhlenberg. Totally didn't like Lafayette for whatever reasons. Liked Haverford but thinks it's probably too small. We thought about looking at Connecticut College. She really wants to get that "feeling" that this is where she wants to be. Any suggestions where alse we can look based on her stats? Thanks so much!

There are many fine LACs in the Midwest, though that may be too far for her. The Honors Program at UDel would shrink her class sizes considerably. (My D’s in the program there … no complaints about class size from her.) Gettysburg is worth the trip. And she might enjoy Loyola in the Baltimore suburbs. Bucknell is very pretty … and very isolated.

I second Gettysburg.

Would Colgate, Marist, or Union be too far?

I’m new at this and not familiar with the honors program. Can you give me an idea what you need to get into it? How else does it differ? I guess I could look it up on their website also but any info would be much appreciated! Thanks so much!

She probably won’t get “that feeling”. “That feeling” is like love at first sight - it doesn’t happen often and it’s not reliable.

Have you visited Drew Univ. in NJ?

I just got a nice feeling.
Colgate, Skidmore, Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Loyola Maryland
I second Gettysburg

I disagree with applicannot, my kids definitely got that “love” thing when looking at what ultimately became their first choice colleges. Some kids just “know themselves” and what they want and others don’t. Keep looking, but there is a chance that she won’t find a first “love”, but I do think it happens more than it doesn’t. Perhaps applicannot was unlucky in love (and I do say that with affection applicannot!)

Actually no, I found my love, just not on a campus visit.

Here is the profile for the 2013 Honors class at UDel. Honors College | Challenge. Enrichment. Community.;
My son is a freshman in the honors program and his largest class is 75 students and that is a gen ed elective. Other than that his largest class is 20 students and he has 2 classes that are 15 students or less.
The support system within the Honors program is incredible.
All the freshmen honors students live in the same dorm complex and they have an upper classman on each floor who acts as a resource person for the honors students. They are also responsible for arranging outings and activities for the students. They are the Russell Fellows (Russell Hall being the dorm complex) and are separate from the RAs.

Vassar? We live in N. NJ–it’s about 1and 1/2 hrs drive. S had similar stats and is very happy there-just began soph year.

I took the info and searched further. We added Drew, Connecticut College, Gettysburg, Loyola (not sure about the Jesuit aspect though!), and Vassar. I feel like we have to visit them all to see if she likes the “feel” of the campus atmoshpere. Are there any others we missed with in the parameters above? Thanks again!

Might look at Holy Cross-near Boston. HC has strong community feeling and internships. Holy Cross seeks religious diversity.

dusty, a 3.9 GPA (assuming it’s unweighted and out of 4.0) is VERY GOOD. If her ECs are equally strong, she could be looking at more selective schools. 2090 SATI is not a strong positive, but it’s not a deal breaker either – as long as her ECs distinguish her. [Maybe she should take the SATI again?]

I definitely agree with the love at first sight potential of LACs. The opposite is also true, i.e, get me outta here!

Could you tell more about what your daughter is looking for aside from size? Urban/Suburban/Rural, Sororities/None, Sporty/Arty/Political?

LACs vary greatly in character as well as environment and it would help to know what’s on her wishlist.

Lots of kids love Trinity in CT.

there is no perfect fit.

so dont chase an illusory goal.

colgate is nice

We went back to the drawing board and came up with a few more additions…with reservations / concerns. We added Drew, Connecticut College, Gettysburg (not a huge fan of Greek life and it seems to be major here?), Loyola in MD but not sure about the Jesuit stuff. Might be too much(?) Vassar, and Ursinus. Any comments/ suggestions or info would be great. I’m starting to panic…

My geography is really bad, but what about Davidson or Bucknell? I second posters who are saying that Colgate is terrific.

You mentioned your concern with Loyola being a Jesuit school. Some of your concerns may be addressed in this current CC thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/777334-jesuit-colleges-universities-some-qs.html

Momrath-to expound on her a bit more…She would prefer a small school more than 2000 but less than 5000 students. She wants a real “campus” feel so I’d say more suburaban and less urban feel. She is not into sports at all. Not as a spectator or participant but if it was a big game and freinds wanted to go, she’s go. She’s somewhat conservative. not into drugs, drinking etc. Greek life is not important and too much of it would probably be a turn off. She’s more artsy than politcal. She’s really eager and looking forward to college but doesn’t want to be more than 3-ish hours from home.
Another quick question, she just started AP calc and is truly concerned that she’s going to struggle. I know all schools say they’d rather a lesser grade on an AP class but I hate for her to really struggle the whole year. Is it that detrimental to drop and AP calc. Her school doesn’t offer honors calc only college prep level. Need to act soon! Thanks!
