<p>While UC Berkeley does not have a music performance major, they do have private piano teachers. However, in order to study with these piano teachers at no extra cost, one has to do an audition. </p>
<p>The requirements are as follows: "Prepare a piece of your own choosing. For pianists, a piece like a Mozart Piano Sonata, a Bach Prelude and Fugue, or a Chopin Prelude is recommended. You will also be asked to sight read."</p>
<p>I also emailed an undergraduate advisor and she said to, "prepare a solo piece (possibly with contrasting excerpts) and be prepared for sight-reading"</p>
<p>Obviously, these requirements aren't as demanding as real music school auditions, but I still want to do well. I have a list of possible pieces, but dont know which would be a good choice. </p>
<p>I have narrowed it down to:</p>
<p>-Beethoven's Sonata No. 5 1st mvmt.
-Beethoven's 'Pastoral' Sonata (No. 15) - 1st or 3rd. mvt.
-Schubert Sonata in A minor - op. 42, D. 84</p>
<p>I am open to other pieces that are of equal difficulty if you have any others in mind. </p>
<p>I don’t know anything about piano rep, but I hope you enjoy playing while in college. My middle child is not a music major but takes lessons with an amazing faculty member and has been very happy about being able to continue with her love of music while “officially” studying other things. Your comment is not designed to elicit assistance and is in bad form. It’s summer and folks don’t post as frequently. You’re also asking about a program that most of the folks here haven’t auditioned for, and for which they may not have direct contacts or knowledge. So cut us a little slack.</p>
<p>are you sure that the piano lessons at Cal are at no cost? in the past, the department paid a small subsidy for private lessons for music majors in the orchestra, etc.; the listed teachers were also not actually on the faculty or paid by UCB for the lessons (although chamber coaches were).<br>

150C. Keyboard Performance. (2) Course may be repeated for credit. Four hours of studio per week. Prerequisites: Music majors only. By audition, for experienced performers of keyboard or related instruments. The program will focus on the study of solo repertoire.
