DD just got notice of being invited to the interview weekend. Parents, are you going with you child? Can a student get a hotel room by themselves? My DD will be 18 by 2 days but not sure if they will let her have a room. Just beginning to plan for this. As much as I would be nervous sending her by herself (she would be flying), there is really not any real "need" for me to be there. Is you child going for the overnight? My DD doesnt want to miss 2 days of school :) so she is thinking the Friday morning. What is everyone thinking?

We would be going with our son, as none of us have seen the school and this is a top choice for son. We had decided to delay expensive college visits until final offers were in, but since this is a chance at a scholarship plus a nice visit, we’re willing to go to this. As for missing school, son usually grumps about taking days off for college visits, but when he got this invite, he didn’t even mention that. Since we’ll be flying from New Orleans, we’ll probably fly in Thursday during the day, as I doubt we could get a flight after school on Thursday. Although we’re Marriott Rewards members, we’ll probably stay in the Drury so we can meet other kids there for the visit. As for sending your daughter by herself, I would give the admissions counselor a heads up on this. Maybe they could advise you on this.

Spring 162, I would recommend visiting with your child. (Lol, I´m still not understanding most of the college confidential lingo, I assume DD is a daughter?) I´m a Pres Scholar and I was at last year´s weekends, and I´d say only 5 or 6 kids each weekend didn´t have parents. It wasn´t a disadvantage at all, but I remember from my experience that even though I liked going off by myself to meet people, it was nice to have my mom there for support.
(Also, FYI: SLU encourages students without parents to stay the whole weekend in the dorms. It´s a good time!)

Can you tell us when Pres. Scholars are notified?

I did find out… 500 finalists with 20 Pres. Scholars awarded.

Thanks Summer07, I decided a few weeks ago to go with her. Coming from the midwest, the weather is so unpredictable that I didnt want to send her by herself. Will use this trip as a learning experience for her, letting her do all the leading and me following. She did tell me after she signed up on-line that the sign up sheet said if no parent was accompanying her she could stay on campus. Also, sign up form said not to book return flight until after 5pm on Saturday. DD needed flight info to fill out this form. Seems like they should have put some of this helpful info into the initial email sent to nominees. Oh well, I booked a flight for 430pm. I guess DD and I will hop in a cab and forgo the free shuttle. Hopefully security wont take forever! Last direct flight of the night. Dont want to miss it.

Any helpful hints for the nominees??? What kind of questions do they ask you?

Spring162, honestly my best advice is just to have fun! The weekend is obviously centered around getting the scholarship, but it offers so many great opportunities to speak with current students, professors, staff, future students, and to see the campus. Heading into the weekend completely stressed out is not the way to go. Please tell your daughter that she’ll have a much better time (and come across to the interviewers as confident and natural) if she conciously tries to not stress out and to be open to everything. EVERYONE running the weekend knows that the stakes are high, but they truely want the applicants and their parents to have a good time. Especially the current scholars-- everyone will be there and they all know what its like to be in your daughter’s shoes. The current scholars are a great resource during the weekend.

Another reason to be excited: If your daughter decides to go to SLU, she might even be meeting her future friends and classmates at this weekend! :)

And MomKay, I’m not sure if the numbers have changed this year, but I was under the impression that more than 20 were awarded. I haven’t heard much about differences this year, so I guess the numbers could have changed.

Thanks, summer, that’s how we’re looking at it. Although I know Dad will be freaking out over the interview, Mom here just wants son to see the school, stay in the dorms, meet the kids, get a chance to see Saint Louis. We’re hoping the weather will be good and cold so he can experience Midwestern weather before heading up there. Also want to see if he gets that “this is where I want to be” feeling when he steps on campus.

I was just going off the number that I was given…I had asked by daughter’s SLU Admission’s Counselor and he replied the following in an email on January 19th.

We are interviewing just below 500 finalists and there will be 20 Presidential Scholarships awarded.

Haha, I´m sure that St. Louis´s February will provide you with plenty of cold weather, Montegut. And MomKay, it seems the numbers have changed; thanks for the update!

Want to wish everyone good luck for their interviews this weekend.
