Hi, I'm an International and I'm not sure how to fill the CSS.

My parents are recent divorced, both are self employed however none of them have a business, they are just self employed, while filling the css profile it asked me to confirm that my parents were self employed however not owners and taxes were $0.

None of them owns a home, my mom rents and my dad lives at one of my grandma's houses, my dad doesnt have a car, my mom has one car. Me and my 4 siblings live with my dad, 2 of them are in school.

And what are exactly assets? My dad used to have a lot of money but because of the world crisis it all went through drain, we still keep some art, one of them is expensive however hard to sell since we ve been trying to sell it for years, and the others left are not that expensive. What am I suppoused to answer on my (parent and student) assets? I dont have a car or house or anything.

Where are you applying? Few schools have much aid for internationals regardless of their financial picture.

Schools will ask for income and asset info from both of your parents most typically.

If you are fortunate enough to have the stats for HYPD, focus on them and the few others that give intnls big aid. Either way, have a good backup in your home country.

Thanks red roses, I am applying to HYPS, but I was wondering how to fill in that info?
Would that make sense? I mean self employed 0 taxes, no business?
What about assets? would they take in art? or how do I let them know Its been for sale but no buyers? since they would calculate contribution based on the assets but there are no buyers? hence no money.
What should be included into the assets? Jewelry, art, what is exactly considered art?

My parents have always been messy when it comes to money, they don’t keep track on how much they earn (perhaps my mom does but i’m not sure), spend and all that…how am I suppoused to calculate?

First, S is not need blind for intnls.

Second, no, self employed no taxes will not make sense. And yes, valuable art is a major asset and there are always buyers at the right price. Recent art auctions have made many question whether the economy is really so bad.

I fear your situation is complec. Who know how colleges will see it. If, for example, you’re applying from an expensive private school and claiming low income and no assets, it could be tough.

Can the family funding the housing fund your education?

First lesson about America, kid – our number one priority is soak the rich. The fact that your family is international just means that you’re going to get it in the teeth even harder than homegrown middle- and upper-class citizens. HYP are the only schools who might be generous with you.

If you can, try and get an appraisal done on your family’s assets. Many appraisers will be willing to give the lowest allowable median range for your good, which you can then use on the CSS Profile. You’re not going to get a lot of help outside of HYP though, no matter what the market value of your goods is. Since Stanford in particular is not need-blind, the only way you might get in is you’re a minority or you happen to have enough money to pay full-price (we like to take money from affluent families and use it to subsidize social programs).

If I were you, I would apply to at least a few schools in your home country, just to have a backup. At the same time, apply to lower-ranked US schols that have merit aid even for international students. There arent that many of them, but they do exist in certain quantities.

Thanks a lot Bedouin and Redroses!!, Ive already been admitted at colleges in my country, but I dont like them I love the liberal arts system and the education isn’t that good.
Im not rich :s, if I were I wouldnt be asking for financial aid, I would be more than happy and proud to pay what it takes and more as long as I get the expected education. My dad had money but not anymore, we have nothing now.

As of taxes, then how am I suppoused to fill that out? Our taxes are included, we dont pay extra, and my dad would have to pay taxes if he were making more than x per month and he isn’t so he is not suppoused to. We are not covered by public health and by the way we still have a 50k debt for hospitals…
And my parents dont keep track on what they spend.

Redroses, its my grandma’s but she won’t lend us since we already owe her 50k.

My dad and I are planning on giving a parent contribution of course, but if they misscalculate based on our weird situation and we are not able to contribute the expected ugh…would be terrible!

Is there a way to caclulate taxes? what else is considered assets?
What can I do with the taxes thing?

Are your parents independent contractors?

What do they do to earn money?

If your financial situation can’t be verified, then you won’t get aid.

The whole system of financial aid would break down if families didn’t have to provide authentic financial information.

These schools get enough applicants who have verifiable incomes/assets without having to borrow with students who don’t.

I would recommend some schools that give good merit to int’ls, but you would still have to show some financial documentation to get your visa…which it sounds like you can’t.

That is right mom2collegekids my parents are freelance contractors.
My father is a Phd arquitecht (thats how bad things are in my country. Phd which isnt common and yet no job) I dont think I would have trouble with the visa, since Ive had student visas before and i hold the b1 visa.
If I get a scholarship I don’t need 50k proof per year just a %. I could reach an annual % for my maintainance and for the school, however not 50k per year.

What documents will I need to proof? Would it be ok if I start keeping every ticket when purchasing or something?
Im turning in my parents bank statement, and my siblings school monthly payment. What else do I need? and how to fill out the assets part and the taxes?

*These schools get enough applicants who have verifiable incomes/assets without having to **borrow **with students who don’t.

oops…meant to write…**bother **with students who don’t.

How much can you/your family contribute each year?

??? I think you’d need a different visa to come here for college. Is the b1 visa related to your parents’ work visa?

You need to show proof of your parents’ income and assets.

What country are you in?

The requirements for a student F-1 visa are a lot tougher than the requirements for a tourist B visa. You will need to demonstrate that a) you have sufficient funds to pay for your education (this could include scholarships), and b) that you intend to return to your home country after you finish your studies. There is a thread in the International Student Forum specifically about the difficulty some students have faced in trying to pass the visa interview. Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen, and scroll down to find that forum.

The single best source for information for students in your country, is the local office of EducationUSA. Read through the website at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.state.gov/) then make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center closest to you. They will be able to tell you which colleges and universities in the US have admitted students like you within the past few years. If they can’t help you with the CSS Profile, they have colleagues in other offices who can.

Wishing you all the best.

Both moms thanks a lot!!..
I’ll get ready as much documents as possible, since my parents aren’t that carefull I’ll start keeping every ticket of purchase possible and start asking them for bank statements and everything related to payments and assets. Ive had the J.1 visa and hold the B (tourist) but never the F1, I’ve read it is harder to get, so hopefully I’ll get (If I get accepted anywhere of course lol)
I’ll ask the Education USA people for help when filling out the CSS.

Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Have a great day!
