since there's a consolidated list of math answers for the cb blue book I thought it would only be right to start a writing/critical reading as well...

pg 429, #8 seems a bit challenging...can anyone explain why E is the answer... (CAPS MEANS THE UNDERLINED PORTION)

Surface mining is safer, quicker, and cheaper than deep mining, but THE GREATER IS ITS TOLL IN HUMAN MISERY.

a) the greater is its toll in human misery
b) it has a greater human misery toll
c) in its human misery toll it is greater
d) there is the greater toll in human misery
e) its toll in human misery is greater

hope this helps:
Explanation for Correct Answer E :

Choice (E) is correct. It avoids the error of the original by removing unnecessary words.

Explanation for Incorrect Answer A :

Choice (A) involves awkward phrasing. It would be more appropriate to say "its toll in human misery is greater."

Explanation for Incorrect Answer B :

Choice (B) involves unclear pronoun reference. It is not clear whether the pronoun "it" refers to "surface mining" or "deep mining."

Explanation for Incorrect Answer C :

Choice (C) involves unclear pronoun reference. It is not clear to what the pronoun "it" is meant to refer.

Explanation for Incorrect Answer D :

Choice (D) leaves out important words. The possessive pronoun "its" is necessary to indicate that "the toll in human misery" is greater where surface mining is involved.

but wouldn't the "its" in answer E also be deemed "ambiguous" b/c it could also refer to surface/deep mining?

no its would not be ambiguous because it is referring to surface mining by countinuing the sentence. But "it is" is ambiguous because you do not know which "it" it is referring to-- surface mining or deep mining.

hopefully that helped. If not, I am sorry if I confused you more.

i think I got it...thanks!

I have another problem....

page417 #29 (error identification)

CONTRASTING WITH MOST OTHER fifteenth-century rulers, Portuguese kings COULD COUNT ON the support of the aristocracy IN ANY overseas ventures. NO ERROR.

the answer is CONTRASTING WITH MOST OTHER...however, I don't see why...is it because it is more accurate to say "in contrast" as oppossed to "contrasting w/"?

I think so. It's probably "In contrast to" or "Unlike". "Contrasting with most other" sounds funny to me.

Well, I guess grammar isn't my strong suit ;) I have another problem...I got it right but I am not exactly sure why...pg429#9

C) "collecting" already said it once, dont need to say it again
D) "the equal of" - Crap
E) Wrong verb, nothing singular in this question so amounts needs to be amount
