Hey everyone! As you can probably tell, I'm hoping to become a Comm Studies major (yes, I realize the program is very competitive/impacted/hard to get into, but I'm willing to work). I was wondering if anyone could advise me on what classes I should take in the fall, in terms of GE and requirements. Also, I know that I have to take Comm Studies 10 eventually, but is it too difficult a class for a new freshman (this will probably sound selfish or shallow, but will it hurt my GPA?)?

My daughter just finished her freshman year at UCLA. She plans to apply to the comm studies major. So we have done tons of research. The first thing is to go to the comm studies dept. website where most of your questions will be answered: [Welcome To The Communication Studies Department — Communication Studies](http://www.commstudies.ucla.edu). Click the topics on the left for more info. (click requirements and admission). Here are the basics. For the major you must eventually complete 7 lower div. classes. In order to apply you only need to complete any 2 lower div. classes. All the classes are listed there. In order to apply you must have completed 45 UCLA units. So if you take at least 15 units each quarter your freshman year you can apply fall of 2nd year. This fall applications will be accepted Sept/Oct.

They say there is no min. GPA but it is common knowledge that you need at least a 3.7 but a 3.8-3.9 would be better. As for what to take your first year…many of the comm studies lower div classes are also GE’s so concentrate on those: Sociology 1 (fills up fast, already full for fall), Ling. 1, Stats 10, Comm 10. Then you could add comm req classes that are not GE’s like Psych 10, Comm 1, Pol Sci 30 or 40. Many recommend only taking comm 10 after you are accepted as it is very tough and it is not required before you apply. The main thing is to keep your GPA up, take at least 2 lower div comm classes and a few GE’s. So look to take Soc 1 (winter or spring), Ling 1, Comm 1, psych 10 and GE’s that are interesting to you.

You could also do a search on this forum for more info. Just type comm studies or communication studies in the search bar above and you’ll get tons of info. Good Luck!

Thank you so much for your help!! I really appreciate it!
