Need Help learning about Low Income and Minority Based Scholarships

I would like to learn from other parents about low income and minority based college scholarships that are available to students living in the southeast.

Questbridge, Jack Kent Cooke, and Coca Cola are basically full ride scholarships available to students from all over the US.

What do you want to know, exactly?

I am realizing I have a gap in my knowledge of college admissions. I like to think I know things, but realize I know nothing about scholarships that are specifically targeted to low income and/or minority students.

I would like to gain knowledge of what scholarships are available, and where would I find details about that scholarship. I am not interested in ultra competitive scholarships like the Coca Cola Scholarship.

I have heard the name Questbridge, but know nothing about it. Anyone have experience with Questbridge or similar type scholarships?

Again, this is just me asking questions to deepen my understanding of college admissions.

Quest bridge is competitive too. Actually, all of the national scholarships are competitive.

There is a Questbridge forum on this site. You can look there for some info.

Are you looking for, scholarships for students who perhaps do not have high grades, but are low income and could use some assistance? Is that what you are asking?

I’m assuming this is a typo and you meant college funding for lower income students. Not admissions.

@ucbalumnus could you perhaps put info about the HBCU that offer scholarships, and the criteria for getting those. This might help this poster. Many of the schools you have mentioned are located in the southeast.

Here’s a more specific question that is genuine–Are the scholarships targeted for low income/minority students going to be at the same caliber of competition as the Coca Cola Scholarship? Students winning national awards, curing cancer, major leadership roles, etc?

Are there multiple scholarships awarded by Questbridge and/or others out there? How many scholarships are awarded yearly to low income/minority students. Is it a Lottery Pick, or do they really have a chance to win a scholarship? Is it worth the effort to apply to these type scholarships?

If you are reading this and would like to help me broaden my knowledge in this area, could you PM me please? Thanks so much.

Basically all scholarships are competitive. Scholarships are to award something about the student like high academic stats, musical talent, leadership, community service. Some scholarship grantors also want their awards to go to low income students, so that’s a factor. Coca cola, for example, goes to high achieving students who have financial need but yes, it’s competitive.

Low income students without the other talents usually are looking for need based financial aid. Most need based FA come from or through the college itself. If you can get into the school based on your academics (competitive), you’ll apply for FA and the school will organize federal aid, loans, state aid, any aid the school has to award to its students. Some schools have a lot of aid, some very little.

Questbridge is a program to help students get into schools. I think the schools then give the financial aid needed.

Some of those colleges’ scholarships are not specifically limited to low income or minority students; they are just merit scholarships (and one does not have to be black to attend a historically black college).

For low income students in general, check the net price calculator on the web site of any college of interest to see if it may provide need based financial aid. Some net price calculators also include stats-based merit scholarships.

Questbridge is competitive in a number of ways. First…the EFC needs to really be about $0 to get the award. The student also has to have excellent stats. Questbridge chooses multiple students if that’s what you mean. If you are asking if Questbridge has multiple awards at different dollar amounts…I don’t know the answer for sure but I think it’s no.

@CottonTales ??

The best place for info on Questbridge is their very detailed web site. It is not hard to find, pretty sure it’s questbridge.org. And yes, it is very competitive. So is JK Cooke (also has a web site with lots of info).

Posse Foundation is another resource, but again, for top students. Many top schools have diversity/fly-in programs. Look at College Greenlight for info.

Look at the Hagan Foundation:

https://haganscholarships.org/

It is for low income students from rural areas that worked in high school. It offers some interesting benefits.

Coca Cola is $20k, not a full ride. But still super competitive.

Posse is not a minority or a low income scholarship.

It is a extrememly competitive leadership scholarship that covers tuition. There are no income limits placed on Posse. ypu dont have to be a low income student to get the scholarship

You must live in one of the Posse cities to apply or be eligible for the scholarship (south: ciies are Atlanta, Houston, NOLA)

There are literally thousands of students applying for approximately 100 slots in each Posse city (10 scholarships per Posse Partner).
