Interests: biomedical engineering, electrical eng., pre-med, business

Wants in School: not too big, anywhere east of the Mississippi river, no rural if possible, strong academic reputation, social scene=not very important, but not a place where people study for fun, undergraduate research

If you could give me some suggestions for safeties, matches and reaches, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

You seem like a really strong candidate. Best of luck.

Reaches: Johns Hopkins, UPenn
High Matches: Lehigh, URochester
Safeties: Tulane, Case Western Reserve

I made sure to only include schools that offer something similar to biomedical engineering, as pre-med and business can be found almost everywhere. Also, I know you said not too big, but your best bets for safeties and matches that are strong in engineering will be bigger state schools. I think Michigan would be a choice for a match, Penn State for a safety.

North East: all in urban locations
Boston College: match
Boston university:safety
NYU: match
John Hopkins: match
UPenn: slight reach
GWU: match
Georgetown: reach

Southeast:
Tulane: safety
Florida: safety
North Carolina: match/reach
South Carolina: safety
Florida State: safety
UMiami: safety

Well those are all options that u could consider.
Florida, UMiami, John Hopkins, UPenn, NYU have some of the top medical schools. so u might wanna look into those.
also out of those, u have a chance of getting full rides at the following:
- Tulane
-UMiami
-FSU
-BU
-Florida
-South Carolina

BC, GWU, NYU, and Georgetown don't offer biomedical engineering. As he's still undecided and that's a field he's considering, it would be most beneficial for him to go to a school that at least offers something similar.

On that same note, the only schools your southeast list that offer it are FSU and Miami.

Take a look at the Honors Medical Scholars Program at Florida State.
See: http://med.fsu.edu/

BU cares a ton about interest, so unless you express it, dont consider it a safety and dont count on a full ride.

With his SAT scores, imo, most schools (that arent Ivies or in the top 25) will be match/safeties. His SAT scores are excellent and should def get him several full rides.
I think the ones I mentioned he could count on full rides just cause his stats are way above those school's ranges, especially in SAT scores. I have several friends I personally know that have gone on full rides to those schools with stats slightly lower than his.
However like Loslobos said dont always count on it. im just saying u have excellent chances of getting those full rides at those schools.

Also some times, schools will show more interest in you than u show interest in them.

hey. thx for all the replies. I was wondering what are my chances at these colleges that I may apply to? are these too ambitious?
Northwestern
Vanderbilt
Michigan
Emory
Georgia Tech
Carnegie Mellon
Haverford
Purdue
Indiana
Middlebury

thx again for the help.

The one on that list that I know best is Carnegie Mellon. CMU would probably be a bit of a reach for you, but you still have a good shot. If you go to CMU visit, I would check out Pitt next door as a safety.

woah woah, arcata i would strongly disagree with you in that:
Boston College: match/low reach
Boston university:math
NYU: match/slight reach
John Hopkins: mid reach
UPenn: mid/high reach
GWU: match
Georgetown:mid reach

I just think that's more realistic, considering, BU isn't really a safety school, and the OP is pretty average for JH as well as GT and even BC, mostly due to rank.

I actually think BU is definitely a safety school for you! Not only are your grades/sats above the range for BU, BU is typically viewed as a safety school ( most pple./college books/counselors define a safety school as one in which the schools yield(the percent accepted that actually go) is below 40% & BU's yield is approx.25%)). In addition to that factor, although I'm not azn- coming from a very rigorous school where the azn pop. is approx. 50%, very few azns with a decent avg ( 85& higher) & decent sats scores(approx.650& higher in each section) have trouble getting into BU & for many azns at my school BU is a comfortable safety. I believe Haverford is a reach( I actually have a couple friends that aimed for Haverford but b/c it is a very very small school, there looking less at sat scores, good grades, etc. & more at what sets each student apart/makes them unique. expect admissions there to be difficult. googd grades/sats will not secure a spot at haverford. Michigan, vanderbit & emory are totally possible for you-it could go either way. carnegie mellon too. howeevr middlebury is a verrryy small school w/ an acceptance rate of approx. 23% which means it is a very diificult school to get into whether you have good sats or not. good luck!

I would recommend Duke, Penn, and JHU immediately, but I think your stats are a bit low so they'd be reaches, same with NU. However, Gtech and CMU are great options - I don't think CMU has a BME major when I was looking at it, it might now. Either way, you could do ChemE and concentrate on biomed, which would be pretty good.

BU isnt a safety for anyone unless you sincerely express interest. We're starting to lose that Tufts Syndrome status we've had. Also, to state that BU is typically viewed as a 'safety school' is asinine and insulting.

BC has no engineering,. Duke has very good biomedical engineering. For pre-med might look at Tufts and Holy Cross. Holy Cross is a top30 LAC that also has very strong alumni network in business world and HC offers good financial aid.

AprilStewart, by your logic JHU, Duke, Northwestern and UChicago among many other elite schools are considered safeties because the yields are at or below 40%. These are not safety schools, so perhaps your assessment is faulty. No, not perhaps, most definitely it is.

Fact is, safety schools are guaranteed admissions, and while the OP's SATs and GPA may be at or above median, judging by the last cycle of applications, there are no guarantees for schools like BU and up, and even schools that are not as good or selective as BU.

BU is not a safety, at this point, for this OP.
