need help me with 3 level 5 SAT writing questions

(the United States coal market was dominated by Appalachian coal for a century, which was first mined in the 1800s)

a) as it is
c)first mined in the 1800s, Appalachian coal dominated the United States coal market for a century.

I got it correct, but I want to check my reasoning. Is it because a) is passive voice whereas c) is favorable active voice?

Cattle ranchers often view the prairie dog as a pest, eating pasture grasses and digs holes that can injure cattle.
a) as it is
e) a pest because it eats

does e) have a "fuller" meaning and tells us why the cattle ranchers view the prairie dog as a pest due to the word "because"?

thanks :)

In the first question, the answer is C because A has an improper modifier. The final clause in the original sentence, describes the coal market itself, rather than specifically the Appalachian coal mining. In option C it is clear that Appalachian coal mining began in the 1800’s. In the second question, it is E because of parallelism. Parallelism requires the same structure to be used in writing, and should always be used. In E the first verb is present tense, and so is the second, therefore it has parallel structure. Always look for verbs to be in the same tense, to exhibit parallelism.

Can someone also help me. I feel stupid but I feel like I am overthinking this…
(In addition to) (being) a talented pianist and composer, Bela Bartok was a (respected) musicologist (who wrote) several books on Hungarian, Slovakian, and Romanian folk music. E
The answer is E. However, I though it was D (Who Wrote.) Shouldn’t it be “had wrote” since there are two events being taken place in the past- 1. was a respected musicologist, 2. wrote several books

I am really confusing myself…

Had wrote is not grammatically correct. It’s had written, and no, you need that who there.
