Need Help Narrowing Down Colleges

Albany Coll of Pharmacy
SUNY Binghamton
U of Florida
Northeastern Univ
SUNY Plattsburgh
St. John's Univ - Queens
SUNY Albany
SUNY New Paltz
SUNY Oneonta

With a 96 gpa and a 1800 sat, which colleges would you recommend removing? I want to try removing between 2 to 5 colleges, thanks.

also want to add that i’m looking into a major that has to do with math or the sciences

I would take out St. John’s and Plattsburgh.

i want to leave st. john’s on there, because i want to try to get into their pharmacy program… I removed Plattsburgh and Oneonta… still trying to take out 3 more

Have you visited any of the schools yet? My manicurists son goes to St. John’s pharmacy school. I get the feeling it is a big communter school, don’t know if that bothers you.

I wouldn’t mind, since I’m considering commuting myself anyway… it’s about 50 minutes from where I live now. From that list, i’ve visited St. John’s, Northeastern, and UF

I’d actually leave Plattsburgh in - it’s a decent school and one of the few SUNYs that you’re likely to get merit aid and an honors program from. If I remember correctly, you said on another thread that finances were a concern.

I don’t think your stats are high enough for SJU’s PharmD program but if the app is still free you can always apply! Same with NEU…and it’s likely to be very expensive. Search for other threads on their forum to see what kind of scholarships, if any, kids with similar stats have been offered.

ACP is a very small school and offers very few majors. It’s unlike any other school on your list. My kid said it reminded her of a high school (in fact the freshman dorm looks like it was an elementary school at one point). Not trying to badmouth ACP in any way as I know many grads who were happy there. But it’s not for everyone…If you can, try to visit the NY to Albany schools.

Thanks, very helpful. Is it worth applying to New Paltz if i’m looking into a pharmacy kind of area (bio, chem, etc.)? I’m thinking of removing SUNY Albany as well, because of the fact it’s a party school.

Should I add Geneseo to the list or not bother?

My son is a transfer student at New Paltz. He loves it there, but is not all that familiar with the science majors. I have heard good things on the grapevine though. Certainly worth going to take a look and meeting with the people in the dept.

problem is i don’t have time to go looking at these schools as i have to hand in my applications before october

If you live in New York state, you really should try to visit your top SUNY choices. You can’t really judge a school by the glossy brochures they send you or what you read on an Internet site.

Might be a good idea to apply to those that you feel are a good fit, then after you are accepted and get your financial pkg , visit and make your final decision.

I agree with vahevala. We didn’t have time to visit every school either but my kids applied to 6-10 that they were most interested in. They then culled those where they were waitlisted or that didn’t offer the scholarship/FA package they needed, which left 3-6 schools that were still interesting and met the financial criteria. We then visited the 'short list", usually on accepted student days/weekends so they would get more out of it than the standard tour. It may cost a bit more in application fees, but it was worth it in terms of flexibility and the time it gave them during their senior year to really think about what they wanted in a school. It also offered the advantage of being able to compare more offers!

The bottom line is, if you’ve got a clearly identifiable reason for a school to be on your list and that reason is still valid, you should probably leave it there!

Btw, what happened to UB? I don’t see it on your list! I would not recommend adding Geneseo, not that it’s not a great school, but it doesn’t seem to fit your interests and admissions would be a long shot. If you’re looking to add schools, I’d recommend D’Youville and/or St John Fischer because of the pharmacy interest. MCPHS in Boston and Wilkes in PA would also be good schools to consider. They would all be likely to offer you more merit aid than ACP!

Didn’t notice I left UB out… I ended up applying to these schools:

Northeastern U
Rutgers NB/Pscataway
St John’s U (NY)
SUNY Albany
SUNY Binghamton
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Stony Brook
U Connecticut
U Florida
U Rhode Island
