This is the summer of my senior year and I'm in the process of researching and visiting colleges. There's just too many to choose from and I'd like some help. Academically, I excell at English and history. I'm also very interested in possibly majoring in psychology.

Here are some of my stats:
SAT: 680 Critical Reading
590 Math (I'm retaking the SAT in October and I'm sure I can raise this)
680 Writing
Combined: 1950
Unweighted GPA: 3.8846
Weighted GPA: 4.9246
Sophomore year: Took AP Psychology - 5
AP World History - 3
Junior Year: Took AP US History
AP Human Geo
AP English Language
Senior year I signed up for AP English Literature, AP European History, AP Microeconomics/Government, and AP Environmental Science
I'm in : Spanish Honor Society (will be 2 years), National Honor Society (2nd year and I'm the secretary), Green Group (will be 2nd year), Key Club (1 year)
I played on the varsity tennis team freshman year. I ran on the track team sophomore year, but just barely missed lettering. This will be my second year of running varsity cross-country also.

Some of the schools that I'm looking at:

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (DREAM SCHOOL)
University of Virginia (maybe?)
University of Notre Dame (I like the atmosphere and it's a nice size)
Elon University
DePauw University (I had a cousin who went there)
Clemson University
University of Florida
Florida State University (^I live in Florida so it would be free)
Butler University (my mom and her sister both went there)
Indiana University (very pretty campus and lots of options to choose from)
University of Michigan (good psychology program)
Wake Forest University
North Carolina State University

Can anyone please make any comments about the listed schools? Which would be good matches? Are there any that I shouldn't waste my time applying to? Also, should I take the ACT and the SAT Subject tests? Thanks!

Virginia, Notre Dame, and UNC are definite reaches. Wake Forest and UMich seem iffy as well, if your SAT score doesn’t come up. Your classes are challenging, which is good, and your GPA is fine (great for some schools on your list, good enough for others). Your ECs are lackluster for some of the schools you’re looking at – for others, they’re fine (they look a lot like mine did, to be honest). Your rank would be helpful, if you know what it is.

Given your stats right now (N/A means I don’t know enough about the school to comment):
UNC: No
UVA: No
ND: No
Elon: Yes
DePauw: N/A
Clemson: Yes
University of Florida: Could go either way
Florida State: Yes
Butler: N/A
Indiana U: Yes
UMich: Could go either way
Wake Forest: No
NC State: Yes, as long as you’re not applying for engineering (doesn’t sound like you would be)

Bring your SAT scores up and you have a better chance. Great essays will also really help you at some schools (Wake Forest, UVA). Good luck!

I’m ranked around 25 out of a little less than 400 students. I’m in the 10%. Thank you for the info tho!

Are you in-state for UNC? Either way, it never hurts to apply.

^^The OP said she is a Florida resident.
OP, My S just graduated fr. NC State. He loved his four years there, never regretted going there rather than UNC.

I believe you should have no trouble getting into your dream school. Their SAT range in 2007 was 1210-1400 and they took 76% of those in the top 10% of their high school class. Just visit, make a few contacts and you’re in.

If she was in-state you would be correct, but UNC is ridiculously hard to get into as an OOS student. Many people believe that it is easier to get into Duke than it is to get into UNC as an OOS student. But, as I said earlier, it never hurts to apply.

NC State was another school I was looking at. I’ll apply to UNC and see how it goes. I appreciate the help!

Based on my stats, what are some other colleges that I could look into?

“I excell at English and history. I’m also very interested in possibly majoring in psychology.”

Go for Elon

No chance at UNC OOS (SAT kills Again) Many NC Campuses require 80% + in state, so that leaves 20% for the rest of the nation…

Yeah, Elon is a great school with a beautiful campus. Definitely up-and-coming. If you don’t get into UNC right away (which is only an if, you never know until you apply) and you go to Elon (or any other school), it is relatively easy to transfer if you keep your grades up the first year.

Another school I would recommend would be the University of South Carolina. Great history program, great school and lots of spirit. Would probably be a match or even a safety for you. Also, wouldn’t hurt to check out UGA.

I’m going on a college trip in July and I set up a tour of Elon which should be good. University of South Carolina was another school that I’ll be sure to check out too.

hey… when i first started looking at colleges last summer (i’ll be a freshman at georgetown in the fall) i REALLY liked both UNC Chapel Hill and UVA, but after i toured them i decided not to apply. Here’s why: Both schools have gorgeous campuses (especially UVA) and nice facilities, but VERY little diversity! About 70 or 80 percent of the incoming freshman classes at these school must be in-state. This means its MUCH easier to get in if you live in-state. You said you lived in FL…sooo if you were to be accepted and enroll at a school like UNC you would be part of a freshman class that is 80% from North Carolina (not the most diverse state to begin with) AND 80% of whom are likely to be less academically competitive than you are (the average scores, gpa and stats for admitted in-state students are way lower than out-of-state students). So unless you want to go to a school where 80% of the student body is from the same place and unlikely to provide academic competition…i REALLY suggest you take UVA and UNC off your list! and just as an afterthough, in case you haven’t looked over it yet, the UVA common application supplement is VERY time consuming.

What other schools did you end up applying to besides Georgetown then?

i applied to elon too, i loved it…boston college, villanova, university of rochester, duke, cornell, boston university, wake forest… since you seem to like the southern schools i would definately recommend elon, but you should check out schools like villanova, wake forest, lehigh, and gettysburg too…they all kind have the same feel to them and are very realistic based on your scores and grades

If you are interested in BC and Georgetown, also look into Holy Cross. Holy Cross is just 30 miles west of BC and is 20 years older than BC and 1/3 the size (3000 students versus 9000). All are run by the Jesuits. List of all 28 Jesuit colleges from most known to least: [Jesuit Colleges and Universities Quiz Results - sporcle](http://www.sporcle.com/games/jesuit_colleges_results.php)

I would also be open to colleges outside of the southeast and Indiana- I based those choices on proximity and the fact that I’m from Indiana.
