need help on choice of topic for my essay

The prompt is: Tell us about one interest or experience of yours that allows us to get to know you better as an individual.

I intended to write about my experience of skiing, how I learn to be 'confident' yet not to be 'over-confident', believing in myself, not to get distracted, etc. But I wasn't particularly good at it; I have just tried it three times and haven't won any award for it. It is just a special activity for me who is living in non-snowy area.

So my question is: would it be better if I write about something else such as my volunteering experience? I already tied my essay to personal interest in my intended major in another essay for the same application, so I suppose my choice of topic for this essay can be freer. I just wanna know if admission officer likes to see applicants writing about their interests that seem to be about 'playing' but not those like overcoming big challenges or contributing to the society.

any help is appreciated

The literal topic matters less than what it says about you. Plus, they like to know what you do for fun. Even if you didn’t win any awards for it, if you like skiing and learned something about yourself through it, write about it :)

Normally I’d say to write about something you know better. I’d think you have an interest you could go into more deeply. But this is an experience you had that seemed to leave an impression on you. You can write in a way they can get to know you better. Don’t mention that you aren’t any good at it. That is unnecessary to the story and not something you want to point out.
