Need Help on Essay Topic

Hi,

I have been wrestling with my common app essay for months now, and although I have crafted numerous drafts on different topics, I can’t seem like one over the other.

Since immigrating to US from Korea was a big turning point in my life, I wanted to integrate this personal experience with an academic subject I’m passionate about: Mathematics/statistics.

After watching Admitium’s videos on personal essay, I really like his advice on finding a specific topic/idea in mathematics and applying it to my hardships.

However, I find it very difficult to find topics in mathematics (that are usually abstract) that suit my narrative.

In this case, would it be better to leave the idea of combining my experience with the academic subject behind and use the traditional narrative essay with a plot?

Any ideas on interesting topics in mathematics/statistics are very appreciated!

Thank you and have a great day!

I can think of ways they might be connected, for example in a strange new world numbers can be very comforting. Math is a language of it’s own the bridges the two worlds. Stuff like that. Or maybe you just pick something you like about math - how you see patterns.

I read a charming essay years ago from a guy who went to Caltech who talked about how he thought about physics when he rode on roller coasters. Did statistics and the election or Covid grab you?
