So I was at a university doing good for my first 2 years. Then I’ve became depressed, and stopped going out or doing my work for the 3rd year. I ended up with a 1.8 gpa, and got suspended for one semester (Fall 2014). I took a break from school in Spring, and started/currently working at a Space Center in Fall. Now being here meeting real astronauts, and learning about every detail of different space programs has started a drive for me to finish. I don’t plan on going to the same university though because it is 2 hours away from home. Also I don’t think the university here will let me transfer with a 1.8. I plan to go to a local community college here just for summer classes. I can’t stay any longer because their isn’t anymore classes for me to take.
Also, all my basic course grades are very good, so after I take these last batch of low level classes during summer. Their isn’t much room for improvement. (History, Humanities, Art, Math, Eng etc)
So your total GPA is a 1.8? If you can, retake the classes you did poorly in if your school has a repeat to replace program or averages the grades. Also, it’s great that you are going to spend a summer at a community college. You can really show an upward trend at this CC to hopefully soften the blow of the low GPA. Since your first two years at university were good, try and get a 4.0 this summer so that the bad year is sandwiched between good terms.
When you apply as transfer, see if there is any place on the application where you can explain the poor 3rd year and your subsequent Space Center work.
I’m not sure what schools you plan on applying to, but good luck.
I’m wanting to transfer to UAH, on my application I will be putting ‘transfer’. So on my CC app for summer, what am I filling out? It isn’t freshman, transient, or transfer. I just want to go there for summer. The hard part for me seems like, getting my summer classes done quick so UAH will accept me for Fall 2015.
Are you planning on transferring any credits over to the community college from your university? Though, regardless if you do or not, UAH will want a transcript from all colleges attended. I would still probably apply as a transfer to the community college.
I’m not sure when UAH’s transfer app is due, but make sure it isn’t due before you finish summer classes.
If you just want to take a class or two, your status probably is “transient”. But it may be to your advantage to enroll as a transfer instead. If you are classified as a regular student, there may be better advising services available to you. Speak with an admissions counselor at the CC, and find out more about your options.
@camoverYes I plan to transfer the courses from my previous university, all my basic/low level courses match up on the equivalency chart. After I take these 3 courses over summer, I will be ready to take my core courses for my degree.
@happymomof1 maybe transfer to the CC for summer, then try to transfer out for Fall?
Here’s some information on transfer students. If I pass the 3 classes, I hope they let me in with a 2.0, which it says they will. It really depends on them, since I will be borderline.
Since you got suspended for last fall, check a copy of your unofficial transcript and make sure you are in good academic standing with your old university.
