Need help on making freshman schedule...

I’m going to have my orientation (session 103) in about a week, and I’m kind of stressing out because I want to go there prepared with an idea of what classes and professors I should get >.< But anyway, I’ve been reading a lot of threads lately (especially the ones by Jeyday_Lovely and UCLApremed, which were very helpful thank you ^^) and I have some basic beginner’s questions:

Where can I go to find the finals schedule for each professor?

On the MyUCLA Class Planner, what does “08F,” “081,” “08S,” and “08W” mean?

Do most people finish their GE’s as early as possible, or do they spread it out during their 4 years of college?

(By the way, I’m thinking about pre-med as of now… I’ll probably decide my major after taking the LS courses and other pre-req…)

Thank you!

Oh wow, I just found mme-lin's thread on "About Completing Your Major (GEs, Requirements, etc.)" ^^! But I'll have to read that later cause I need some sleep right now =.=

Welcome to UCLA :).

1) You can go to the following link to see which classes are offered each quarter: Schedule of Classes Home Page

After you select a course, you can click Crs Info and the final exam information will be displayed for that course.

Also, if you use the MyUCLA Class Planner, when you select courses, the final exam information will be displayed on the bottom.

2) Those represent the different quarters - (08F = 08Fall, 08S = 08 Spring, 081 is summer session I think...)

3) From an engineering perspective, most of us spread our GEs throughout our 4 years of college. It'd suck to be left with only engineering courses, so it's nice to get a break once in a while. I'm saving most of mine for senior year or my more difficult quarters.

Hope this helped..

Oh, and have fun at orientation!!

I'm going to have to re-do that thread since the links are gone.

1) Addendum: MyUCLA planner shows you if you have schedule conflicts.
2) 081 is summer sessions.
3) Agreed with MIC... consider though engineering has rigid schedules. For some majors, it's more appropriate to finish off those GE classes fairly rapidly... if not inadvertently. Example: history majors can quickly move through their GE requirements either by plowing through Writing II's while possibly satisfying GEs at the same time. Then, the four science GEs get knocked out over time usually while Historical and [Social? Societal?] Analysis get out of the way fast.

What's your major? Are you pre-med? Considering engineering? Some sort of Arts&Architecture or Theater/Film/TV or Nursing major?

Thank you MadeInChina, your post was very helpful ^^! And thank you mme-lin for re-doing your thread ^^! I came up with a few more questions since I started researching around this morning:

For pre-meds, would it be recommended to finish the GE's as soon as possible or to spread them out throughout college? (I still have to take some foreign language and writing classes too... =.=)

If I can't find certain teachers on BruinWalk, does that mean their new?

If I can't find certain classes on the "Schedule of Classes Home Page," does that mean those classes aren't available for the term (quarter) I was looking at?

When using "Schedule of Classes Home Page," what does "R" and "T" stand for under "Days MWF"?

Is there an easy way to figure out how to overlap your GE's, college honors program coursework, pre-req for your major, and UC requirements as much as possible?

Does "in series" mean that you're taking the classes in order? Is it better or worse? (I heard it's helpful to take classes out of series to avoid the curve set by other pre-meds, but will I have to take summer classes to catch up?)

Chemistry and Biochemistry: 14A, 14B, 14BL, 14C, 14CL, and 14D
When UCLA lists the pre-req for chem and biochem (for example), are we recommended to take them in that order? And should 14B and 14BL (L is for lab?) be taken together in the same quarter then?

Sorry, I know that's A LOT of questions, but I would appreciate it if I could get some advice on the ones you know how to answer.

(Btw, my progress so far: making a table of some of my classes, professors, midterms, and finals and figuring out which professors are better ^^)

1) Do you plan on being some other non-science major and then doing your pre-med requirements? If so, pretend you're an English major. In this case, I'd spread out the pre-med requirements. If you're a biology major, plunge in and complete your major and spread out your GEs so that you're not stuck with a heavy science load at some point... still, you'll have plenty of work with upper-division courses...
2) Not necessarily.
3) It means they're unavailable or not offered that quarter. In that case, check out the tentative course listings for Winter/Spring 2009.
4) R is Thursday. T is Tuesday. They're probably discussion sections if they're under the lecture heading for MWF.
5) Short answer is No. :)
6) It means taking them in sequence - 14A, 14B, 14C... where each course is requisite for the next.
7) Well, you have to take them in order so that you can take the next course...? I don't understand the first question. Some people take 14B and 14BL in the same quarter or in separate quarters.

if i am a life science major do i take math 31a or calc for life science students, or does it even matter

Choose Math 3A if you're absolutely sure you want to be a Life Sciences major.

i don't know for sure, but i think it either means they're new or don't want to be on it.

...yeah.

there are five weekdays. they are abbreviated as MTWRF. make sense now?

also, lots of classes have certain days for lectures and others for discussions. in that case, the bold text is for the lecture.

not that i know of...though i don't think there is such thing as "UC requirements," other than Writing II and minimum units for graduation.

just grab a list of GEs and your major classes and start cross-referencing. i'm sure you'll be bored sometime during the summer.

all (pre-)requisites are, by definition, required.... if a certain requisite is just recommended, it will say "recommended: (...)" in the course description for whatever class you're looking at.

a class and its lab (e.g. 14B and BL) are usually taken together, but they don't need to be. however, you must take or be taking the lecture before you can take its lab class.

and use the myucla class planner, if you haven't discovered it already.

By UC requirements, I think the OP was referring to requirements mandated for all of the colleges within the university.

Not necessarily, I believe an student organization (not to be revealed) is running Bruinwalk. I don't think the professor has the power to enlist him/herself in the professor ratings. Some do read what students write about them.

To add a new professor to the list, whoever is on the bruinwalk end has to approve the add. It could be laziness, verification .. who knows why new professors aren't added?

I've tried to submit new professors; I have failed each time.

Thank you everyone for all the help! And I really appreciate everyone taking their time to answer my never-ending questions above!

I have so many windows opened right now... UCLA Honors website, MyUCLA Portal, BruinWalk, Schedule of Classes Home Page, the pdf file for GE's, several word documents where I take notes, my e-mail, and of course CollegeConfidential! But yup, thank you so so much for making this process a little easier for me!

Tonight I will be printing a lot of stuff and doing some serious overlapping...

Another question for now:
1. On the class catalog for GE requirements for the College of LS, are the classes listed under "Honors Collegium" meant to be taken for credit for the College Honors Program?

Thank you once again.

Yes they are.

Okiedokie!

always good to be prepared!

do you guys think it is possible to go from the humanities building to covel commons in 10 minutes? i'm looking at two classes and i was wondering if i could make it in 10 minutes, or is it just too far?

also, is education52f recommended for first year freshman (esp. first quarter)? anyone have experience with barbee

^

yikes. seems like a time crunch, unless you run...which would be pretty embarrassing..lol

Barbee, I've heard, is a wonderful man.
