Hey guys
So I’ve started preparing for the ACT, and I’ve scored a 35 on the English section in every practice test I’ve taken. I’m pretty happy with this but, after going through what my mistake each time was, it appears that I ALWAYS get questions on modifiers (such as dangling and misplaced modifiers) wrong. Any tips on how I can get better at this particular concept/skill?
Thanks
If in doubt, pick the answer with the Subject in front following by the Verb (action).
Mods are simple but sometimes take some getting used to because we have little or no trouble understanding them even when they’re wrong. The rule, though, is elementary: they must modify THE SUBJECT. If there’s no subject they can be modifying, they’re dangling mods and if the mod doesn’t match the subject, they’re misplaced mods:
While running to catch the bus, my shoe came off.
Subject: my shoe.
Was your shoe running to catch the bus? If not, it’s a mod error.
