I am a junior in college would like help with some suggestions. I like the outdoors and exploring (preferably working both in and outdoors, don’t want to sit in an office all day, I get antsy having to sit all the time), I enjoy and am good at photography, and I am good at research.
You really haven’t declared a major yet?
Are you a junior in high school and wrote college by mistake?
I am a junior in college, I got a lot of set backs from things that happened in life that wasn’t my fault. Just would like help figuring out from this list, which area should I major in.
Are you more of a math vs science vs writing intensive type student?
Can you tell us what school? It all colleges offer certain majors. I have couple in mind.
And have you satisfied your core requirements and could you afford two more years.
Last three questions. How many credits do you have at this time? And what is your current course load this semester? What is your current gpa?
I am attending University of Nevada Las Vegas, I have satisfied all my core requirements, I have an associates of science degree (general), I could afford two more years, and my current GPA is 3.95. I have also taken math up until calculus (which is math 127, right before math 181). And to the first question, I am not sure.
What is the limit of the number of remaining semesters you can take based on budget and administrative restrictions?
What majors can you complete in that number of semesters or fewer, based on what you have taken already?
I have around 70 credits, I could go three more years, which is 6 semesters or 7. I can complete any liberal arts, arts, and a few bachelor of science majors.
What subjects are you most interested in?
Some possible majors do have some (not necessarily strong) association with careers that involve being outdoors (although some careers may be hard to get into): civil engineering, architecture, anthropology, history, political science, sociology, geosciences, astronomy, life sciences.
I have met a few people who have outdoors jobs. Two had been forestry majors. One was a civil engineer. The problem that I see is that these are relatively specialized and it is not clear whether or not you have time to complete either major.
I also wonder whether environmental sciences or geology or landscape architecture or construction management might be something to consider. I don’t know much about any of these subjects however.
Yes, I have thought about landscape architecture, geology, and anthropology. What is funny is, I met with an advisor that helps students in the department of art (architecture) and while I was talking about things I like, she was watching my facial expressions, which I didn’t subconsciously know I was making when I was talking. She could tell photography was what I should do, but I know for a fact a photography degree isn’t worth the time, because pros are self taught, and I have even taught myself photography and have come close to actually winning a few big photo contests. She could tell architecture wasn’t what I should do, but didn’t really go into landscape architecture. I have read some forums about architecture, and heard that the schooling is brutal and long, and for the amount of hard work and dedication that is put into it, it just doesn’t pay well as much as the hard work and dedication you could put into another major/career. Unfortunately with my school, there is just too many prerequisites to each class and some are only offered during certain semesters, which can put students behind even more. So I think I am a little stuck because of that, because I decided to go to community college first, which is fine, but this schools system is set up so weird, especially if you are transferring.
First and foremost, an advisor simply gives advice-- if you feel strongly about what you want you can certainly consider, then ignore her advice.
Could you combine your love of photography with a Communications or Journalism major? I’m thinking of maybe an eventual career as a wirter/ photographer for a magazine or TV station or something. If you could broaden your skill set to include video, that might make you more marketable. That could make use of your research capabilities.
I have thought about it, just not sure which one I would like more or which one would make me more marketable. My school has communication, not communications which is a bit different, but the journalism program is journalism and media studies.
How about a combo of Photography and something like Small Business Ownership – or whatever the Business equivalent would be at your school? Learn not only how to be a photographer, but how to own your own Photography business. And learn Video and editing… all the computer applications that are necessary these days in Photography.
Go online and find professional photography forums. Start asking questions about doing professional work that is not just weddings. See what’s realistic. As @bjkmom had suggested when students get stuck I suggest just somehow combining their interests. That usually works and makes you unique also. One of my workers husband takes photographs for the plannatarium in Chicago as an example. See what type of work leads you outside more kind of thing. Environmental science seems to be big now,as mentioned. Maybe trying to combine these two just to give you some ideas. https://www.environmentalsciencedegree.com/average-salary-in-environmental-science/
I have not read the entire article but their are many when you start to combine the search words.

Have fun doing various searches and let us know what you find.
I’m studying communications and I love it! It has combined a lot of my interests, and there are so many great job opportunities in the field, especially if you have photography and videography skills!
But here are some other helpful tips for choosing a major! You’ve got this!
