My son will be self-studying AP US History this year. He is homeschooled and he will be taking the second semester through a program he is attending, but first semester he will be doing it on his own.

I am looking for suggestions for a textbook/study guide/reading list/prep book to use.

What textbook is the best one? I have seen alot of websites that mention The American Pageant -- should he get that one?

What about study guides -- there is one for the American Pageant. Would that be good (he will not have a teacher to give him work or questions).

Any additional books (fiction/non-fiction) that are useful?

What about prep books? He has not had US history since middle school, so he really needs more of a regular teaching approach than a review. Would using a prep book along with the textbook be a good combination -- or would that be better in the weeks before the test?

Thanks for the help!

I would definitely suggest The American Pageant, it's the one our school uses, and it worked out pretty well for our class overall. Also, may I also suggest "The Great American History Fact-Finder." I know that this book which is basically a dictionary of history is awesome for when you get down to crunchtime. Other than that, I would suggest getting started early considering the amount of information to be found on the US History test. And good luck to your son :D

tony -- thanks for the info. He will definitely be starting early -- he is going to treat it as a regular class and work on it daily.

do you know if the study guide that accompanies The American Pageant is any good?

We've used a ton of books for APUSH majorly because we needed to be informed on every single topic, we've read quite A LOT to say the least what I would suggest is finding books based on related topics or if you want an overview here's my list

Review Books:

REA's APUSH
