Need help planning Wake visit

D. and I are considering flying from Albany, NY to Greensboro, hoping to rent a car at the Greensboro airport, and driving to Wake in Winston-Salem. How long should we plan for the drive from Greensboro to Winston-Salem, and is the Greensboro airport the one you'd recommend, or should we consider Charlotte? Any hotel recommendations would be most appreciated, as well. Please excuse the travel info. ignorance of we upstate New Yorkers! Info. about Wake visits in the Campus Visit section of CC is limited...Thanks very much.

I live in NC, but I’ve dropped friends off at GSO before - I think it’s a fine airport (unless Charlotte is significantly cheaper). GSO is approximately 30-40 minutes from Wake., whereas CLT is about an hour and a half. There is a Courtyard a few blocks away from the school that’s fine - it’s on University, but there’s not much within walking distance as far as food goes. Alternatively, if you want to stay downtown, there’s a number of good local restaurants that are within walking distance - I know there’s a Mariott downtown.

Thanks, Juba. That’s a start. Anyone else?..

GSO is very doable.
I would recommend the Courtyard by Marriot on University Blvd. I stayed there quite a few times.

j2j is right on the money. D is just going into her senior year at WFU. It’s a very easy drive from GSO to campus. We’ve flown into RDU a couple of times, but then the drive is longer. We fly out of Hartford, CT, so have to change planes to get to GSO, but have gotten a direct flight to RDU. Pricing is the deciding factor for us. We stay at the Marriott Courtyard on University Parkway when we go for Family Weekends, drop-offs, etc. (We even have our reservations for graduation!) It’s very close to campus. Another one that’s close is the Holiday Inn Select, also on University Parkway.

GSO is a very easy airport to go through. Most large domestic airlines fly there out of the major hubs, minus Southwest, AirTran, and a few others. More than likely, you’ll be forced to connect onto a smaller regional jet, but other than that, it should be a breeze. When I visited Wake, my dad and I flew into Raleigh, which wasn’t so much a “problem,” but it was obviously a much longer drive to campus. Most students fly through GSO.

The airport is about 30-40 minutes away from campus, depending on traffic, etc. During move-in, my family and I stayed at the Embassy Suites downtown, which is very nice with the free breakfast and nice-sized rooms. During the year, my parents picked the Residence Inn (not sure which road, but I want to say it’s off of University), because the rooms are very spacious and even have kitchens- there’s a grocery store (Food Lion) right across the street too. We’re trying the Marriott this time, and apparently that is nice as well. If you want to be really adventurous and don’t mind being a bit secluded from the “city,” you can try Tanglewood Park. We spent Easter there last year, and it is a very nice state park, about 30 minutes away- it’s nice, but I would only recommend it if you wanted to tour the “area” as a whole.

Your best options are probably the Marriott, Embassy Suites, Holiday Inn mentioned above, or the Residence.

Enjoy your visit!!!

Thank you all so much for the very helpful info. We are planning to fly into GSO, will stay at the Marriott, and since we are flying in the day before our visit, will have some time to explore Winston-Salem. Very much looking forward to it.

Yes, GSO is the way to go. If you are at the Marriott Courtyard on University, you are very close to campus, and nice friendly staff. Our favorite restaurants when we visit our daughter is “6th and Vine” downtown, Village Tavern, Mellow Mushroom.
