Need help plz.. shortlist for PhD programs in Biosciences??

Hi everyone.. its my first post here.. I've been going thru the forum for a few weeks now.. but still confused.. I'm an international student n want to apply for a PhD in biosciences.. my main interests are molecular biology.. and my absolute specific interest is stem cell biology.. based on that which Universities do u think i shud apply to..

I plan to give the GRE general n Biochemistry tests in a few months' time.. I want to apply for fall 09.. I'd be grateful for any help/ suggestions I can get for making a shortlist of which schools to apply to.. my criteria is good research n academics, funding for international students and a good campus life. shud i broaden my criteria.. i'm a bit befuddled about the whole thing..

I already have a bachelors in biochem n a research masters in Life sciences.. I can get good scores on both the GREs if i really put my mind to it.. also.. i've taken a gap year cuz i needed to sort myself out before deciding on a PhD.. does that go against me in any way..

Thanks again for helping.. :)

Johns Hopkins, Columbia, UCLA, UCSF, Rockefeller U. appear on both of those list. Enjoy!

thanks Phead.. do u also know about the kind of GRE scores wanted and the funding offered by these Univs..??

For Biochemistry Wisconsin is simply outstanding.

Graduate Program | IPIB | UW-Madison

for stem cell stuff, the main places are MIT, Harvard, and Stanford. Columbia is starting stem cell stuff but it's still in the building stages. Wisconsin also has a good stem cell program (or at least 1 lab that is quite renowned)

This was already mentioned by two individuals but for stem cell research, University of Wisconsin Madison (my alma mater) cannot be beaten. btw, more than one lab are national/international leaders in stem cell technology at UW. Admissions to UW are more competitive than most people realize; I know for sure that the microbiology dept has acceptance rates below 6%. California has a stem cell research institute and would also be an excellent place for grad school in this area.

Does any one have an idea about the admittance rate for the IPIB program at Madison?
