Need Help quick!

Ok, I am wondering if I should bother trying to get into USC. I need to sign up for the ACT today if I even want a chance because I did not take the writing part when I took the ACT before and they require it.

My current ACT composite score is 24 (expected to go up a point or so if i retake)
My accumulative GPA for high school is 3.94
I am applying for the animation/design major in the cinema department so I have some good drawings and paintings ill submit (they are by no means absolutely phenomonil but they are pretty good.
I am from Iowa if that makes any difference lol

Do you think I have a good chance at getting in? I do not really want to retake the ACT and do the writing part if it is just a waste and I really stood no chance at all...

thanks for any help!

This is a link to the freshman profile for the last few years in terms of scores
http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1011/FreshmanProfile2010.pdf

Your GPA is great, your ACT is below the middle 50%. It would seem though that other schools you apply to might want a writing score. So if you don’t have SAT scores, then you have no writing score for any college to see if you don’t retake it.

Bawnawgwa,

Sure you should apply! Your ACT is low for USC as they prefer to see a score of 26 (ish) as their bottom target BUT your GPA is really good and that might balance you out in their eyes.

Some things to think about at USC Admissions:
1.) They only look at UW GPA. Sure they want you to take hard classes but they measure based on unweighted averages.
2.) Your stats will signal to USC that you are a driven over-achiever. (low ACT/high GPA) Most colleges will mentally label you this way so why not play that up in your essays? You’re the motivated over-achiever and most colleges like that.
3.) USC is private so being from out of California doesn’t mean a thing. Even Iowa!
4.) Your portfolio will count more than your ACT score.

So, yes you should apply to USC, and yes you should retake the ACT (sorry about that). Try really hard to bump your ACT to 26 as this will make a huge difference on your odds of being accepted.

Best,
Wheaty
