need help raising score

I got my score from the october test and to my luck I got a 23.

Math 26
English 23
Reading 21
Science 20

What can I do to improve. Any advice or strategy will help. I only have two more chance to increase my score to at least a 30. Thanks

What I did was just gloss over rules, tips, and tricks in an ACT prep book and finished all the practice questions. As you learn the rules and the types of questions they ask it gets easier to do the questions correctly. Just keep practicing, dude. I think you’ll reach your goal.

First of all, do not feel hopeless(I used to).I improved from 22 to 29(I’m aiming for a 31.I know my weaknesses). So you are doing better than I was doing (A question for experts: Do I need to put a comma here ?)when I first started. Get every prep books you can find except Barron’s(the tests don’t look like the real one and are not precise at all) and use every opportunity improve yourself.

For English:
1)Review the rules and do the practice questions
2)Do a bunch of complete English sections without timing.
3)Check the questions you got wrong, and try to understand what was wrong with your answers and how can you correct them(before looking at the explanations at the back).
4)If you have time management problems, skip the logical-sequence-of-sentences type of questions(It takes 2 minutes for me to do them, and I can’t even get them right half the time)
5)Keep doing #3 until you get a 36.

For Math:
I didn’t really improve my score since I already had a 36. Still, I recommend you to study more advanced math (it’s not really necessary ,though) and solve #50-60(hard ones) kind of questions until you get a 36.

For Reading:
This one is the hardest one for me. I just run out of time but ,I believe ,I figured it out.

1)If you also run out of time, do only 3 passages and guess the rest.(Check which one you do the worst on and skip that one.)
2)Note the key parts of the questions on the passage page(ex:“What are the advantages of hybrid cars?” and you write down:“advantages of hybrid”).
3)As you spot the answers of your questions, go back and mark the right letter.
4)For the main idea questions, read the first and the last sentences of each paragraph(if the passage is blurry in your mind)
5)As you practice you will have more time to spend on the passage you skipped.

For Science:

1)Do the Scientist-Comparison passages at the end.Do the short ones first.
2)You, most probably, won’t have much background about the passages. Therefore, I recommend you to read the info at the beginning quickly. Then, go to the questions and use the graphs and everything else to answer the questions.
3)You might need to read some more, occasionally. Don’t destroy your brain trying to get the answer from the graph.
4)Practice until you get a 36.

My strategies might not work for you and not even for me. You realize what is best for you as you practice. Never feel disappointed if you get a low score somehow. Those who got 36 didn’t born as ACT-Masters; they became one.Keep practicing.

Please inform me if I made a mistake with punctuation.

Thanks for all the support and advice. I’m in calculus so math is not my problem, I just need to refresh on some facts. What kills me is the reading and the science. I always have 5 mins left on the last passage. I feel like I’m guessing on almost all the questions on the science protion.

I trying to get a 30.

A jump from a 23 to a 30 is equivalent to a 400 point jump on the SAT.

@cjgone

easily possible if you didn’t prepare at all the first time you took it

(and scored rather low)

Even easier if you didn’t look at the test booklet on the first taking too.

Anything is possible, even a 7 point increase. I have the december test and the february test. I believe I can make it.

A friend jumped from 26 to 35 in one month. He says he didn’t study at all. He is kinda stupid, I can’t understand how it is possible. (Yes, I have seen his actual scores)

That dude got some brain.
